Procedure

Apply In-Person

1. The applicant should pick the application forms for Malawian citizenship from the Department of Immigration Republic of Malawi.Contacts Link

3. The applicant has to fill up the application form with the correct details.
4. Then, submit the application form with the required documents to immigration headquarters or regional in-migration offices.
5. The applicant must submit the application form with the required processing fee.
6. At the time of the processing period, the applicant may be called for interviews.
7. If satisfied, then the authorities would approve the application.
8. The applicant will notify if the application gets approved.
9.  The processing of the application will take a maximum of 30 or 60 working days.

Eligibility

Any person being a non-commonwealth citizen who has been residing in Malawi for over 7 years is eligible to apply for Malawi citizenship.

Fees

• Registration : Malawian Kakwa 500,000
•  Naturalisation : Malawian Kakwa 500, 000
•  Citizenship Processing Fee: Malawian Kakwa 10, 000
  

Validity

Malawian citizenship is valid forever unless it is revoked by the government.

•  Citizenship is based upon the Malawi Citizenship Act, dated July 6, 1966.
• Applications for citizenship are handled by the department of immigration.

• Full names and addresses in block capitals.
•  Place and date of birth.
• Profession or occupation.
•  Present nationality or citizenship.
• Date of entry in Malawi to take up ordinary residence.
•  Present Passport details.
•  Marital status.
• Languages known.
• Particulars of any criminal proceedings taken against the applicant at any time in any country.
  

Need for the Document

• Malawian citizenship may be acquired upon fulfilment of the following conditions:
  

The person is of an African race or has Commonwealth or Malawian ties, has resided five years in the country, has adequate knowledge of the English language, intends to reside permanently in Malawi, and will renounce previous citizenship.
