Procedure

Apply In-person

1. The applicant has to collect and prepare all the required documents and visit the Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority (MERA) in their respective area. Contact Link
2. Visit the office to obtain the application form or download it directly from their website Link to Website or from this link Application From
3. Fill the application correctly with all the required details.
4. Pay the required application fees and obtain the bank slip.
5. Go to the MERA office and submit the completed application including the fees receipt at the licensing section.
6. The licensing officer will verify the application and if it is correct, then it will be gazetted for any objections or complaints at a fee incurred by the applicant.
7. At the end of the advertising period and if there are no objections to it, then the licensing office will forward the application to the Energy Technical and Licensing Committee of MERA.
8. The committee will estimate the application and confirm their decision to the MERA main Board.
9. The Mainboard will assemble and make a decision on whether to issue the license.
10. If they decide to issue the license, then the applicant will be notified of the decision through the contacts provided in the application form, within 3 months.
11. The License will be processed and availed for collection at the licensing office.

Instructions

• Nobody shall carry on or be involved in any activity related to the supply of electricity, including the export of electricity from, and import of electricity into, Malawi, without a generation, transmission, importation, exportation, or distribution license, as the case may be, issued by the Authority.
