Procedure

This procedure provides you information related to cancelling or surrendering a vehicle registration number or certificate (RC).

Apply In-Person

1. To cancel or surrender a vehicle registration (RC) the applicant has to approach the appropriate RTO office where the vehicle has been registered. Following link can provide you information related to the list of RTO office : Regional Office Locations, Transport Commissioners Office Locations
2. The application should be made in a plain paper where you explain the reason why you are surrendering or cancelling the registration of the vehicle.
3. The letter should have a subject where you mention the reason for cancellation and the engine and chassis number.
4. In the letter please provide detailed explanation on why the RC has to be cancelled and all the below listed information related to the vehicle.
   • Registration Number
   • Engine Number
   • Chassis Number
   • Model of the Vehicle
   • Colour of the Vehicle
5. Submit the application form along with the documents to the RTO who will investigate and give you a decision on whether your application is accepted.
6. If your application is successful you will be requested to pay the fee that is required for surrendering the RC.

Required Documents

• Original RC.
• If Original RC is not available, the applicant should provide the FIR related to the unavailability of the document.
• Valid Insurance Copy
• Couple of pictures of the vehicle, showing registration number, engine number and chassis number.

Eligibility

• If the vehicle is stolen and never retrieved back.
• If the vehicle is damaged because of fire or because of accident where it cannot be used anymore.
• If the vehicle is not usable anymore due to various reasons.
