Registration for Student (Locally Trained Nurse)

  1. For a nurse/midwife to practice in Liberia he or she should be licensed with the Liberian Board for Nursing & Midwifery (LBNM). It is the responsibility of the Board to ensure that all nurses that are within its jurisdiction meet a certain level of competence before starting their practice. Thus, licensing examination is administered to the health practitioner to ascertain that the applicant meets all qualifications. LBNM Contact Details
  2. Nurses/midwives who wish to be entered into the Liberian Board Nursing/midwife roll/register are required to show that they have attained the required competency by Ministry standards.
    • Applicants should refer to the “Eligibility” section of this page to confirm eligibility and contact the Board to begin the registration process.
  3. Accredited Nursing/Midwifery schools shall submit a list of potential candidates for all cadres/programs to the Health professionals’ competency assessment and licensure Liberian Board for Nursing & Midwifery registry office prior to the examination date.
  4. The Board must forward registration numbers and admission slips for all institutions days prior to the examination.
  5. The institutions shall communicate the updated list of candidates with the signed consent two weeks prior to the examination date and the updated list should be posted for candidates.
  6. The final updated list of candidates enrolled for the State Board Examination should be released on the official website of the Liberian Board for Nursing & Midwifery.
  7. Individual, the applicant will be required to complete the State Board Exam Registration form, and attach proof of deposit for the registration and course amount of US $25.00 in favour of the Board.
  8. On receipt of the candidate's application and proof of payment, it will be reviewed by the registrar and the candidate will be issued with a registration number, which should be used in all future communication with the examination directorate.
  9. The registrar issues admission slips, examination schedules, and candidate manuals for registered applicants.
  10. The registrar shall communicate the status of the candidate (PASS/FAIL) within 1-2 months after the completion of the State Board Examination.
  11. A candidate who fails the examinations can apply for a re-sit as scheduled by the Board.
  12. Candidates who passed the state board examination will be required to deposit an amount of US$90.00 with the LBNM for results comprising of (Certificate, transcript, Cardex Card, and first license)
  13. The applicant will be notified to collect his /her Log Book for rotation, Code for National Service registration, and provisional Practicing license via text or phone call. One is required to bring proof of identification when collecting the documents.
  14. Upon successful completion of the required clinical placement, candidates will be eligible to register fully as a professional medical practitioner (midwifery /Nurse) and will be required to return the Log Book and Provisional License to the Ministry Registry Office.
  15. The registrar shall document candidates’ records, a list of simulated patients, a list of assessment centers, a list of assessors, a list of supervisors, a list of invigilators, a scoring sheet, and other relevant documents.
  16. Once the verification and validation processes are over and if the application is found sufficient, it will be approved and the officials will proceed to take the required steps to Register the beneficiary as per the category applied for and award him/her with the registration certificate, CPD logbook, badge and the practicing license.
  17. The applicant will be notified to collect his/her registration documents via text or phone call. One is required to bring proof of identification when collecting the documents.


Registration of Foreign-Trained Nurses and Midwives

  1. Where the applicant has studied or worked abroad (Citizen/ foreigner) and wishes to be entered into the Liberian Board for Nursing & Midwifery (LBNM) roll/register he/she is required to show that they have attained the required competency by LBNM standards.
    • Applicants should refer to the “Eligibility” section of this page to confirm eligibility and contact the LBNM to begin the registration process.
  2. Upon receipt of the complete registration dossier as listed under the “Required Documents” section below, the Registrar will check the documents for completeness and authenticity. If everything is in the order he shall forward all applications to the council/association responsible. which shall then verify the applicant's qualifications with the relevant training school and board of nursing/midwifery from the respective country.
  3. Please note; the application shall also be accompanied by all applicable fees and should be deposited as prescribed by the Council and proof of payment shared with the council office.
  4. Upon being satisfied with the information provided by the respective institution, candidates will be shortlisted and invited for an oral interview by the Registration and Licensing Committee. Based on the results of the oral interview, successful candidates may be invited to sit a written exam or proceed for a clinical placement to acquaint themselves with healthcare systems in Liberia for a period to be determined.
  5. Candidates are issued with a Log Book for rotation, a Code for National Service registration, and a provisional Practicing license.
  6. Upon successful completion of the required clinical placement, candidates will be eligible for full registration as professional health practitioners and are required to return the Log Book and Provisional License to the LBNM Registry Office.
  7. The registrar shall document candidates’ records, a list of simulated patients, a list of assessment centers, a list of assessors, a list of supervisors, a list of invigilators, a scoring sheet, and other relevant documents.
  8. Once the verification and validation processes are over and if the application is found sufficient, it will be approved and a senior registration and licensing officer will proceed to take the required steps, to temporarily register the beneficiary as per the category applied for and award the applicant with the registration certificate, logbook , nursing badge and the practicing license.
  9. The applicant will be notified to collect his/her registration documents via text or phone call. One is required to bring proof of identification when collecting the documents.

  • National Identity Card and/or Passport

  • Letter from the Council indicating that you have passed the licensing examination.

Registration of Foreign-Trained Nurses and Midwives (Permanent):

  • Transcript of training
  • National Identity Card and/or Passport
  • Three (3) passport-sized photographs
  • A copy of the Birth Certificate
  • Photocopies of Professional Certificates (original copy to be presented for inspection)
  • Marriage certificate where applicable
  • Two (2) testimonials from previous/current employers where you have practiced for at least one year
  • Copy of last appointment letter
  • Verification of registration from the original Council/Board.
  • Proof of payment of the applicable fees
  • Copy of certificate of proficiency in English from an approved school of languages.


NB: Documents that are in Languages other than English should be translated into English with a copy of the document in the original language attached to it.

EligibilityEdit

Applicants should meet the following criteria:

  • To be of good reputation and commendable conduct.
  • To have never been sentenced in a felony or misdemeanor (for a custodial penalty in a crime involving moral turpitude or breach of trust, unless rehabilitated in either case). In short, not to have a criminal record.


To have attained one of the following academic degrees:

  • A Bachelor of Science in Nursing from one of Liberia’s high institutes, or an equivalent degree elsewhere than in Eritrea, which the Liberian Board for Nursing & Midwifery (LBNM) recognizes as equivalent to the qualification by examination required by the LBNM.
  • A Diploma from a healthcare institute affiliated with the Ministry of Health (nursing division) or an equivalent degree.



FeesEdit

  • A Registration and course amount of US$90.00 fees.
  • US $25.00 or its equivalent in Liberian currency upon passing the state board examination.



ValidityEdit

  • The validity of the practice license is two years, and the application for renewal should be submitted on time before the lapse of the current license, to allow enough time for the renewal due process to be completed.
  • Late renewal incurs an additional penalty charge as prescribed by the Liberian Board for Nursing & Midwifery (LBNM).
