Apply In Person

  1. To obtain a Waste Disposal License, the applicant should make the application to the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA). Please view the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) contact details through this NEMA Contact Details.
  2. The applicant should visit the NEMA office and obtain the application form to operate a waste treatment or disposal site (Application Form VI) or the applicant can download the application directly through this Application form VI.
  3. Read and complete the application form correctly and attach all the required supporting documents as mentioned in the “Required Documents” section below.
  4. Then the applicant should pay the license application fee of Ksh. 3000 and attach the payment slip to the application file.
  5. Then the applicant should visit the NEMA office and submit the application dossier to the NEMA officer at the Licensing section.
  6. The NEMA officer will verify the application and complete the relevant section of the application form.
  7. Then the officer will forward the application to the licensing department for processing.
  8. The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) will inspect the proposed disposal site to determine if it meets the required standards for licensing.
  9. Upon completion of the due diligence process, the National Environment Management Authority determines that the application is eligible for licensing, the National Environment Management Authority will inform the applicant of the successful application within 30 days for the date of making the application and require the applicant to pay the annual license fee of Ksh. 75000.
  10. The applicant should then pay the license fee and submit the payment slip to the NEMA office licensing department.
  11. Then the National Environment Management Authority will process the Waste Disposal License and issue it to the applicant.


Apply Online

  1. To apply for Waste Disposal License online, the applicant should make the application through the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) Licesning Portal via this NEMA Licensing Portal.
  2. On the portal, a registered applicant should enter his/her username and password to login into the portal.
  3. If the applicant is not a registered user of the licensing portal, the applicant should click on this hyperlink “Click to Register(New Applicants Only)” at the top right corner of the portal, to create a new account.
  4. On the User Registration page, the applicant should enter all the required detail correctly and click on the “Submit” button.
  5. The system will register the applicant’s detail and inform the applicant that the account has been created successfully.
  6. Then the applicant should go back to the login page and enter his/her username and password and login into his/her account.
  7. Once logged in, on the left side of the portal, the applicant should click on the “Waste Management” menu and then click on the “Disposal Application Form” hyperlink to go the online application form.
  8. The applicant should then populate the online form with the correct information and upload all the required supporting documents as instructed.
  9. Then the applicant should click on the “Submit” button to send the application to NEMA.
  10. Upon receiving the application, NEMA will require the applicant to pay the license application fee of Ksh. 3000.
  11. Then the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) will inspect the proposed disposal site to determine if it meets the required standards for licensing.
  12. Upon completion of the due diligence process, the National Environment Management Authority determines that the application is eligible for licensing, the National Environment Management Authority will inform the applicant of the successful application within 30 days for the date of making the application and require the applicant to pay the annual license fee of Ksh. 75000.
