The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA), is mandated by the Environment Management and Co-ordination Act (EMCA) 1999, to exercise general supervision and co-ordination over all matters relating to the environment. It is further mandated to be the principal instrument of government in the implementation of all policies relating to the environment.
Apply In-Person
- You should start the application process by visiting the National Environment Management Authority offices to make the application.
- Here you will give an Application for Licence to Practice as an Environmental Impact Assessment/Audit Expert FORM 6 to complete. The form may also be downloaded online and filled before visiting the offices for submission.

- (a) Fill in your the required information, which include
- Pay application fee and bring the paying in slip to the NEMA offices to facilitate the registration. The registration fees are as follows.
- Associate Expert (Citizen) Ksh 2,000 (Non – Citizen) Ksh 6,000
- Lead Expert (Citizen) Ksh 3,000 (Non – Citizen) Ksh 9,000
- Firm of Experts (Citizen) Ksh 5,000 (Non – Citizen) Ksh 15,000
- The fees are payable to the following account:

- Associate Expert (Citizen) Ksh 2,000 (Non – Citizen) Ksh 6,000
- Attach copies of academics and technical certificates, copy of national ID/Passport, and bank payment slip to the duly filled application form6 and submit to the NEMA offices for processing. You may also mail it application to the following address

- The registration certificate is usually ready after a period of 7 days. Notification for collection will be made through text message. One is required to collect the licence I person from the NEMA offices. You are required to carry a proof of identity during collection.

- Open The National Environment Management Authority Website NEMA
- Click on the Licensing Portal tab
- For new users click on the Click to Register (New Applicants Only) tab. This will navigate you to a registration page where you will fill in your personal details to create and account.
- Open your email, you will find a message from NEMA. Open our portal through the link given in your inbox and fill in the rest of the details.
- Fill in your work experience, academic qualifications and other NEMA licences that you may be having.
- Upload your scanned documents in their respective places and press next
- Enter the transaction number indicated in the payment slip. The payment date is the date you deposited money to the bank.
- Submit your application and print the application notification.
- The registration certificate is usually ready after a period of 7 days. Notification for collection will be made through email and text message. One is required to collect the licence I person from the NEMA offices. You are required to carry a proof of identity during collection.

EligibilityEdit
The following shall are the criteria of experts qualification;
A). Associate Experts
- An Associate expert must have attained the following qualifications;
- A bachelor’s degree in any field
- Training in Environmental Impact Assessment & Audit from a recognized institution.
- An Associate expert must have attained the following qualifications;
NB: A comprehensive Curriculum Vitae must accompany other documents during application for registration.
B). Lead Expert
A Lead expert must have attained the following qualifications;
- A Doctorate degree or equivalent in any field plus training in Environmental Impact Assessment & Audit from a recognized institution, with 3 years’ experience in environmental Impact Assessment related activities.
- A Doctorate, Masters or Bachelors plus 5 years’ experience in Environmental Impact Assessment related research consultancy or teaching and at least two relevant publications in referred journals.
- A Doctorate degree or equivalent in any field plus training in Environmental Impact Assessment & Audit from a recognized institution, with 3 years’ experience in environmental Impact Assessment related activities.
- Or
- A master’s degree in any field plus training in Environmental Impact Assessment & Audit from a recognized institution, with 5 years’ experience in environmental impact assessment related activities.
- A master’s degree in any field plus training in Environmental Impact Assessment & Audit from a recognized institution, with 5 years’ experience in environmental impact assessment related activities.
- Or
- A Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent in any field plus training in environmental impact assessment from recognized institution, with 8 years’ experience in environmental impact assessment related activities.
- A Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent in any field plus training in environmental impact assessment from recognized institution, with 8 years’ experience in environmental impact assessment related activities.
NB: Comprehensive Curriculum Vitae must accompany other documents during application for registration.
C. Firm of Experts
A Firm of Experts must meet the following conditions;
- A Firm profile indicating capacity to undertake Environmental Impact Assessment & Audit
- At least two Registered and Practicing EIA/EA Experts. One of the Experts must be a Lead Expert.
- Certificates of registration and Practicing Licence for the Individual Experts.
- Certificate of Registration /Incorporation
- A Firm profile indicating capacity to undertake Environmental Impact Assessment & Audit

- Registration of Environmental Impact Assessment Experts is a mandatory requirement by the National Environment Management Authority in order to control the quality of Environmental Impact Assessment /EA reporting by ensuring ethical and professional conduct in Kenya.
- It proves compliance with NEMA practices and regulations.

- Local and Foreign environmental impact assessment individual and firm of experts wishing to undertake environmental impact assessment activities in Kenya shall register as Experts with the National Environment Management Authority on payment of the registration fees.
- All applications should be done online through NEMA website – licensing portal.

- The registration is a prequalification for application for a practising license.
