Kenya - How to Check for the National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) Contribution Status

  1. The National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) is a Universal health coverage (UHC) that covers the nuclear family which includes the principal member and legally declared spouse and children. NHIF Branches contact details
  2. Members can check their contribution status using the following ways;
    • Visiting the nearest NHIF branch office or Huduma center
    • NHIF official website
    • NHIF APP
    • USSD Code 21101
    • Vie Email address to the NHIF


Apply in Person
Visiting the nearest NHIF branch office or Huduma center to check NHIF Contribution Status

  1. Registered members can visit any of the NHIF branch offices or any Huduma Centre countrywide and check their contribution status by simply requesting the NHIF staff.
  2. The member will be asked to provide his/her identity card number verbally to enable the NHIF staff to access the member’s account and provide the member with his contribution status.
  3. The time frame for processing the request/application is within a few minutes and they are no fees associated with this service.


Apply Online
Check NHIF Contribution Status via the NHIF official Website

  1. Members will be required to register for the NHIF self-portal, click on the “Register” tab Enter your National ID/Passport/Alien ID and year of birth, then click on the “Continue” tab
  2. On the next window fill out the registration form with all mandatory fields, and attach the following relevant scanned document
    • Valid identification document: (ID card/Passport/Alien Id).
    • Attach Passport Photo.
    • If married, attach Marriage Certificate.
  3. Then click on the “Save” tab. Where the applicant has filled in all fields, the application will be submitted automatically upon clicking save.
  4. The system will automatically notify the applicant of their Application Status, it will also send a Notification SMS to the Contributor's (Applicant) Mobile Number.
  5. Upon successful registering with the NHIF self-portal, enter your ID number then click on the “Get One Time Pin (OPT)”, and enter the OPT sent to the Contributor's (Applicant) Mobile Number.
  6. Once log in to the portal, proceed to check your NHIF account status online. Applicant monthly contributions, penalties, and arrears will be displayed on the screen instantly.
  7. The time frame for amending the certificate is instantly and they are no fees associated with this service.
  8. Users should ensure they log out of the system when they are done with the application process. This is to avoid unauthorized access to a third party(s) who may manipulate the information.


Check NHIF balance online via the NHIF App.

  1. Download the “My NHIF” App from Google Play or App Store and register or log in to access your NHIF status.


Check NHIF statement/ Contribution Status via email

  1. Members can also check the NHIF statement via email. Use the email [email protected] to request an NHIF statement.
  2. Upon receipt of the request the NHIF will send the member a contribution statement.
  3. The time frame for processing the request/application is within a day and they are no fees associated with this service.


Check NHIF status via SMS

  1. Members using their mobile devices should Type ID > skip a space > ID number or Passport number (e.g. ID 123456). Send the text to NHIF status check number 21101.
  2. Member is required to have a minimum airtime (credit) of 30 Ksh to access this service.
  3. Wait a few minutes, the member will receive an SMS with his/her NHIF account status.


Check NHIF status via USSD code *155#

  1. Alternatively Dial NHIF USSD code *155# on your device to register for the NHIF self-care portal. You do not need credit to use this service.
  2. Select language that you are conversant with,>> “National Health Scheme>> enter ID No>> Verify Get One Time Pin (OPT).
  3. Once able to access the service, proceed to check your NHIF account status. You will see your monthly contributions, penalties, and arrears
