Kenya - How to Add a Dependent to the National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF)

The National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) is a Universal health coverage (UHC) that covers the nuclear family which includes the principal member and legally declared spouse and children. NHIF Branches contact details

Apply In Person

  1. For an active registered member to be able to add a dependent (Child or Spouse) to his/her National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) health cover, the member is required to physically visit any of the NHIF branch offices or any Huduma Centre countrywide to add the dependent (s) to their cover.
  2. The member is required to present the following documents to be verified by the NHIF staff at either office:
    In the case of a child;
    • Copy of birth certificates for children above 6 months (or birth notification for children below 6 months).
    • Proof of legal guardianship/adoption letter from the children’s department at the county offices.
    • Copy of national identification card for the principal member.
    In the case of a Spouse:
    • Copy of marriage certificate or an affidavit from an advocate/magistrate or commissioner of oaths.
    • Copy of national identification card for the principal member.
    • Copy of the new spouse’s national identification card.
  3. The member is issued with an NHIF-Application for amendment /Update form, which is also downloadable via the NHIF website; NHIF Forms or directly download via this NHIF-Application for amendment /Update form
  4. Upon obtaining the form, carefully complete the appropriate information under relevant sections, authorized personnel should attest the form with their signature once completed.
  5. Attach copies of the supporting documentation and submit them for processing. No fees are charged for this service.
  6. The NHIF staff will then proceed to register and add the dependent information into the NHIF system immediately.

EligibilityEdit

  • All active NHIF registered members are eligible to apply for this service.
  • The NHIF health covers the following;
    • legally declared spouse and children.
    • One cannot include other relatives apart from your legally declared spouse and children.
    • One can only add one spouse to their cover.
    • Additional spouses will require individual covers.
    • One can add orphans and/or adopted children to their cover by obtaining proof of legal guardianship/adoption letter from the children’s department at the county offices.
