- A medical and dental graduate who intends to undertake internship training shall apply to Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC) for an Internship License. Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council’s (KMPDC) Office Location & Contact Details.
- Those eligible should collect and complete the Application for Medical & Dental Practitioners Internship Licence Form, available at the KMPDC offices or download them via the KMPDC website KMPDC Downloads, (scroll down the page and then click on the “Other Form” option to locate the forms) or directly download them using these links -Application for Medical & Dental Practitioners Internship Licence.
- Submit the supporting documentation as mentioned under the “Required Documents” section of this page, in addition to the duly completed application form, in all respect, to the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council’s (KMPDC) Office. Any omission of the required information or documents will render the application process incomplete.
- The application shall also be accompanied by proof of payment of the license fee of Ksh.5, 000.
- Upon receipt of the application, the receiving officers will check for discrepancies or ineligibility in the application documents. If a discrepancy that cannot be immediately corrected exists in any of the documents, the application and all the submitted documents will be returned to the applicant and should not be re-submitted until the discrepancy has been rectified.
- If the receiving officer is satisfied that all the requirements have been met for the application, it is registered for consideration and the applicant is issued with an acknowledgment slip as proof of submission of the application and for inquiry referencing if the need arises.
- The KMPDC office may request additional information relevant to the application. In such a case, the information must be submitted within the stipulated time from the date of notification. Where the applicant fails to submit the required information, the application shall be rejected.
- After the document evaluation phase have been completed satisfactorily, which is usually completed within two (02) weeks, the KMPDC office shall prepare the Medical and Dental Practitioners Internship License, which shall indicate the approval scope and limitations and shall

- While collecting the internship license, the applicants will be required to submit a copy of their posting letters from the Ministry of Health and identity document to be validated by the Council.
- NB:
- An internship license and guideline logbook are mandatory requirements before the commencement of the internship.

EligibilityEdit
- Evidence of having completed an undergraduate course in a recognized medical school in Kenya.
- Doctors qualified from medical schools within the East African Community (EAC) region and who qualify for reciprocal recognition.
- Doctors who have attained the minimum requirement for admission to universities in Kenya, and have qualifications from outside the country must have passed the internship qualifying examinations set by the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists’ Board (KMPDB).
- Evidence of having signed the Hippocratic Oath.
- Passing the Internship Assessment Exam.

Are Doctors on internship required to comply with the Continuous Professional Development (CPD) Requirements?
- Every doctor has to comply with the CPD requirements of acquiring a minimum of 50 points within a calendar year.
- Since the Internship is a full-time training period, the doctors are expected to upload the internship completion certificate in their Integrated CPD Management System portal upon registration. This earns them 50 CPD Points.

- It is illegal to undertake an internship without an internship license issued by the Council
- An internship helps an intern to consolidate his or her knowledge, skills, and attitudes to enable them to be competent medical practitioners.
- An internship is also supposed to enable an intern to acquire knowledge of commonly used drugs and their rational use, be conversant with the National Essential Drug List, and know the dangerous drugs and poisons Act and its application.

- Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery – 11 weeks
- Prosthetics and Conservative Dentistry – 11 weeks
- Periodontology – 11 weeks
- Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics – 11 weeks
- Community Dentistry
- Every intern, whether medical or dental, shall participate in community health practice as part of the internship program. This shall be done every Friday of the week for the entire duration of the internship (fifty-two weeks). The interns shall spend eight hours every week (total 416 hours for the year), supervised by the Family Health Physician/Dental Public Health Specialist, providing health services to the community

An intern’s responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Clerking patients.
- Undertaking relevant investigations.
- Guiding relatives and patients with regards to diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up.
- Documenting and updating patients' notes.
- Participating in Continuous Professional Development activities.
- Appropriate handing over of patients.
- Reporting to and consulting with the supervisor.
- Maintaining professional demeanor and conduct.
- Participating in the tracking of patients.
- Performing any other duty assigned by the supervisor.
