Applying for a loan:

  1. Application for the loan is submitted through the schools in which the student is currently enrolled or where the student will attend classes in the case of Prior applications. You must first coordinate with your school about requirements you will need to present or submit and obtain their recommendation. Also, ask if they can give you a copy of the application form.
  2. Complete the forms and submit it along with all the required documents.


After being granted a loan

  • Qualifications of the loan recipient will be checked annually.
  • In order to provide scholarship loans to qualified students who truly need the support, JASSO, every year, confirms the qualification of students as loan recipients in cooperation with the schools in which the students are currently enrolled.
  • Based on the "Application for Continuation of Scholarship Loans" and other documents submitted by students, it will be examined whether they are eligible to continue to receive loans based on their character, health, academic ability, and financial condition.
  • Change of monthly loan amount, and refusal: The monthly loan amount may be changed, or the loans may be refused at the request of the scholarship student.

EligibilityEdit

JASSO offers Category 1 Loans (interest-free) and Category 2 Loans (interest-bearing) to students attending graduate schools, universities, junior colleges, technical colleges and specialized training colleges (post-secondary courses).

These loans are offered to students who are academically outstanding but have significant difficulty in pursuing their studies due to financial reasons.

The selection criteria are based on the following standards: student's character, health, academic ability, and his/her family's financial condition.

Requirements for recommendation (for Post-entry application of university students):


Category 1 Loans:

  • Have obtained average of grades above 3.5 for junior and senior

years of high school

Income requirements: Upper limit of the family's annual income (unit: ?million):

  • National and local public: approx. 8.52
  • Private: approx. 9.07


Category 2 Loans:

  • Have shown academic performance above average in highschool.
  • Show exellence in one specific field.
  • Be motivated and qualified to accomplish studies.

Income requirements: Upper limit of the family's annual income (unit: ?million):

  • National and local public: approx. approx. 11.75
  • Private: approx. approx. 12.23


Note: Income requirements show the upper limit of annual income of those who support the living of applicant's family.

When to apply for the loan:

  • Prior applications (applying before commencing studies): Students may apply for scholarship loans before start of classes. Applications are accepted through the schools in which students are enrolled the year prior to commencing studies.
  • Post-entry applications (applying after commencing studies): Applications are accepted through the schools in which students are currently enrolled. In principle, there will be a notification for application every spring.
  • Emergency applications (Category 1 Loans), temporary applications (Category 2 Loans): Applications for scholarship loans are accepted anytime through the schools in which students are currently enrolled if the necessity arises because of sudden changes in financial situation of students' families due to unemployment, personal bankruptcy, company bankruptcy, sickness or death, or disasters such as fires, earthquakes, storms, or flooding.

Need for the DocumentEdit

Established under the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (Monbukagakusho), Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO) is an independent institution that administers scholarship loan programs, support programs for international students, and student support programs. These programs are designed to foster the development of creative individuals who, rich in humanism, will become the leaders of society in the next generation, while at the same time to promote international understanding and exchange.

Loan recipients are selected upon being recommended by their school heads and undergoing strict screening by JASSO.
