ProcedureEdit
Apply In-Person
- To apply for connection of electricity in Jamaica, you should visit the Jamaica Public Service (JPS) office to submit your complete application at any of their offices or Through the JPS Customer Care Centre or Send an application to your Account Manager, if one is already assigned to your organization. You can view the JPS contact details via this link: Link
- Before you apply for securing of connection of the electricity, you should complete all the electrical wiring work for your Facility or Development by the following steps:
- Obtain the services of a licensed Electrician to either carry out the job of installing wiring for your new facility/building or to check, upgrade and rectify the existing wiring in your existing facility/development.
- Now, the licensed Electrician will prepare the Government Electrical Inspectorate (GEI) Notice Form and ensure that the necessary sections of the form are accurately completed.
- Then have your licensed Electrician pay the necessary inspection fees, through the Collector of Taxes who will submit the receipt to the GEI. This receipt must be duly signed by the licensed Electrician, who will also affix his/her Electrician License Number to the receipt.
- Then the GEI and your licensed Electrician will agree on the inspection date. On that day the GEI inspector must have access to all areas of the building/site where electrical wiring exists for a thorough inspection
- At the end of the inspection, an Electrical Inspection Report based on the results of the inspection will be issued to your licensed Electrician or his/her representative.
- An Unsatisfactory report indicates faults or defects that must be corrected by the Electrician. A repeat of the inspection process will now be necessary and depending on that faults or defects may incur an additional fee to the GEI.
- Hence a Satisfactory Report will allow you to start the process of getting your wiring connected to the JPS electric grid.
- If the GEI inspector is satisfied that the installation has been satisfactorily completed they will issue you a certificate of approval within seven working days after the inspection and they will send a corresponding certificate to JPS authorizing that the installation is energized.
- Once the electrical wiring has been installed or upgraded and has passed inspection by the GEI, you can proceed with your application to the JPS by contacting their Customer Care Centre or visit one of the Commercial Offices to make a preliminary request for the installation service. In addition, an application request can be sent to your Account Manager, if one has already been assigned to your organization.
- Write an application letter requesting the connection of the electricity then prepare and attach all the required supporting documents mentioned in the “Required Documents” section below to the application form
- Submit the complete application to JPS through their Customer Care Centre, or to their Commercial Offices.
- Upon submission of your application, the Jamaica Public Service (JPS) will conduct its due diligence to verify your application
- The JPS will review your application letter and the associated drawings and then they will send an inspector to inspect the site to determine that the site layout and the requirements have been met to supply you with electricity.
- Once the JPS has proved that you meet the required standards for electricity connection, the JPS’ Engineering Team will determine the Final Estimate to be charged for the connection of electricity and you will be issued the invoice
- Pay the required fee as mentioned in the invoice to the nearest JPS Customer Service Office and obtain the payment receipt
- Once you have paid, the JPS will install external connection works which include meter installation and other equipment to ensure that electricity starts flowing. Then they will invite the Government of Jamaica Electrical Department (GEI) Office to inspect the above additional electrical work done on the power lines.
- The GEI Officewill certifythe work and will notify you of the approval
- You will then pay a security deposit to JPS. Note that this is refundable upon termination of the service being provided.
- Then the JPS will proceed with the final meter connection and enable you to make use of electricity in your facility or premises
