Apply In-Person
- If you wish to become a Justice of Peace (JP) in Jamaica, you should submit your application to the Custos office in your parish of residence. Please view the list of custos and their contact details through the Ministry of Justice (MOJ) via this link:Link
- Obtain the JP application form for the custos’s office in your parish or download it directly from this link:Link
- Read the form and complete it accordingly. Note that the application form should not be photocopied
- Then prepare all the required documents as instructed in the last section of the application form and attach the documents to the application form
- Go to the Custos’s office in your parish and submit your application
- Upon receiving your application, the custos will instruct the relevant authority to make a background check on you as a precautionary measure to ensure that you are indeed suitable for the position of the Justice of Peace
- Upon the background check, the Parish advice committee will convene to assess the applications received for the JP’s appointment. The committee is made up of the Custos, the Resident Magistrate, and the Superintendent of Police
- The committee will approve a list of persons most suitable to be JP and the Custos will submit the approved list to the Minister of Justice who will review the list and make his final recommendations to the Governor-General
- If you are appointed to be the Justice of Peace, you will undertake the JP’s training
- Once you have gone through training, you will be commissioned into the JP’s office by taking the oath of office
- Now as a JP, you will be issued the instrument of office and the official seal authorizing the discharge of the functions of that office.

EligibilityEdit
To be eligible to apply as a Justice of Peace, you must satisfy the following criteria:
- You should be a Jamaican citizen who is resident in Jamaica at the time of appointment and be able to read and speak English fluently
- You should be at least 23 years old
- You should be a person of unquestionable integrity and who commands the respect and confidence of the local community
- You should be a person who has given good service to the community and the wider Jamaica and who demonstrates the potential for continued service.
- You should be able to communicate and interact at all levels and with all types of individuals in your community.
