ProcedureEdit

  • The programme is guided by the policies and guidelines developed by the Head of the Ministry located in Kingston. The programme is however, administered through the Ministrys network of thirteen Parish offices.
  • Persons wishing to apply for the grant may visit the offices of the Ministry of Labour and Social Security (NIS Office) in his/her Parish or call 1-888-991-PATH or 1-888-991-7284 for further details.
  • Fire victims are assessed by the Ministrys Social Workers and offered immediate assistance in the form of food and comfort items. Victims are also investigated and assessed for eligibility for a Compassionate Grant. In such cases, each family is required to present a fire report from the Jamaica Fire Brigade Department.

  • Persons wishing to apply for assistance are required to provide evidence to support each application for benefit. The evidence required is dependent on the programme and the peculiar circumstance of each case.

EligibilityEdit

Types of cases that are considered under the program:

  • Victims of robbery
  • Children attending schools (other than Primary/All-Age) who are in need of uniforms, fees, etc.
  • Fire, flood or hurricane victims who have lost their belongings and are without insurance
  • Purchase of urgently needed medical aids or the replacement of such aids which have either been lost, stolen, destroyed or have become unserviceable
  • Funeral expenses for persons deemed destitute
  • Expenses for medical bills such as medication, laboratory tests, ultrasound and x-ray which are not available through a public health facility.

Need for the DocumentEdit

The Public Assistance Division of the Ministry of Labour and Social Security administers a number of non-contributory social assistance programmes. It provides financial assistance to the most vulnerable groups in the society, namely; children, persons with disabilities, the elderly, pregnant and lactating mothers and the unemployed.

The Ministry offers four types of grants one of which is Compassionate and Emergency Grants. This type of grant are available to persons who are in need of speedy assistance and who cannot access such assistance under any other scheme. It aims to provide swift response to emergency situations. This benefit is either paid in cash or in kind. Following is a procedure on how to apply for the said grant.
