- To apply to become a Notary Public in Jamaica, you should submit your application to the Governor General’s Office. Please view the Governor General’s Office contact details via this link: Link
- Obtain the application form for appointment of notary public from the Governor General’s Office and complete it accordingly
- Prepare your two Certificates of Fitness to practice as a notary signed by two existing notaries or practicing Attorneys-at-Law of not less than 10 years standing and attach the certificates to the application
- Then visit the Governor General’s Office to submit your application
- At the Governor General’s office, the application will be verified by the responsible official and the application will then be forwarded to the Ministry of Justice
- The ministry of Justice will assess the application to determine if you meet the standard requirements to be a notary public and then they will refer your application to the Chief Justice
- The Chief Justice will request a confidential report on you from the Society of Notaries Public.
- Based on the report and assessment of your application, if it is determined that you are suitable to be a notary public, your name will be shortlisted for the position of the notary public and your name will be placed on a waiting list
- When the public requires the appointment of another notary or there is a vacancy for the position of a notary, a selection of the most suitable candidate for appointment will be made from the list depending on the date of application.
- If you are successfully appointed,the Minister of Justice will then cause the Writ of Dedimus and your Commission will beprepared and sent to the Governor-General for signing
- You will then be informed of the appointment in writing and you will be taken through the due process of a notary public appointment
