This declaration can be carried out at:

  • The maternity hospital where the baby is born, in which case it is issued by the Medical Director
  • The town hall of the city where the baby is born
  • The town hall of the city where the parents live, if it is different from the place where the baby was born
  • The city of residence of the mother, if the parents live in two different places
  • The city of residence of the father, if the parents live in two different places and if they agree

Registration of babies born to foreigners in Italy

  • Once the birth has been registered at the town hall, parents will need to contact their nation's consulate or embassy in Italy and comply with the procedures required.

EligibilityEdit

The complaint can be made of Birth:

  • by one of the parents if married
  • from both parents, if not married - recognition of natural child
  • by a special prosecutor appointed by the parents
  • by the doctor or midwife or other person who has witnessed the birth, respecting the wishes of any parent not to be named

To qualify for this recognition must be at least sixteen years.

InstructionsEdit

The declaration of birth can be rendered as follows:

  • within 3 days at the Head Office or Home health care facility where the birth took place.
  • within 10 days at the Registry Office of the Municipality of birth or place of residence of the parents or one of them.
  • in cases where the parents do not reside in the same municipality, unless otherwise agreed between them, the declaration of birth is given in the municipality of residence of the mother.

Once the baby is born, it is compulsory to declare the birth at the Register of Births, Marriages and Deaths (Registro Communale dello Stato Civile).

The Birth Declaration (Dichiarazione di nascit) is made orally, without witnesses, within three days if done in the hospital, and within ten days if done in the town hall.



Required InformationEdit

Birth records generally give the childs name, sex, birth date, and birthplace, and the parents names. Many of the early records and all of the later records provide additional details, including the parents birthplaces, ages, and occupations and the mothers maiden name. The baptism date is usually included with the civil birth record.


Need for the DocumentEdit

Once the baby is born, it is compulsory to declare the birth at the Register of Births, Marriages and Deaths (Registro Communale dello Stato Civile).

This declaration of birth can be made by either one of the parents, a person to whom the parents have given proxy, a doctor, an obstetrician or any other person present during the delivery



Information which might helpEdit

If the parents are not married, or if the mother is legally separated from her husband, the baby can be registered before the birth.

Late declaration if the declaration has been made after 10 days of birth, the registrant must indicate the reasons for the delay registrar, who shall report to the Prosecutor's Office.

NB. In the case of stillbirth or death occurred before that declaration was made, the declaration must be made exclusively registrar of the municipality of birth.

Birth registration is necessary as it helps when obtaining a birth certificate.

Births were generally registered within a day or two of the childs birth, usually by the father of the family or by the attending midwife. Corrections to a birth record may have been added as a marginal note.
