InstructionsEdit

This certificato can be obtained from the Ufficio di Stato civile (Office of Vital Records) of the town or city.

The Office of Anagrafe (Office of the Census) keeps a record called certificato di stato di famiglia (Certificate of Family Status). This document shows the composition of the family unit, including names and dates and places of birth, etc. limited to the family members who were still present at the time the document was prepared.

With the exception of few towns that started to keep such records from about 1870, they are usually not complete for those related to periods before 1911, which means that they have to be constructed by the town official researching each birth, marriage, and death record separately.

Required InformationEdit

  • Full name of the head of the household
  • Full names of all members living in the same household
  • The relationship of each member to the family
  • Civil status
  • Place of birth
  • Date of birth
  • Sometimes, the number, part and series of the birth act is also indicated

Need for the DocumentEdit

The Certificate of Family Status shows all the events of a family from the beginning of its constitution. It includes changes of domicile, or other changes, as: births, marriages and dates of decease recorded in chronologic order.

Information which might helpEdit

This document may not be proof of the claim of all the legal heirs, if the family has formed in different places and then its members were residing in different municipalities. In this case we require the original certificate in the municipalities in which all members of the family were residents.

Other uses of the Document/CertificateEdit

This document is also required for notary purposes, or to hold information about inheritances, successions, etc.

OthersEdit

This very unusual certificate is also a boon for genealogist. It contains information on the family unit as a whole. Some towns started keeping this type of record as early as 1870 but was not common until 1911. This record truly reflects the Italian belief in family. It will contain information on each member. Grandparents, Parents, siblings, Births, deaths, marriages in usually chronological order.
