InstructionsEdit

The most important fact to remember about genealogical records in Italy is that records are kept at the town (Comune) level, with duplicate copies of these records being deposited in State Archive (Ufficio dello Stato Civile) of each province, located in the provincial capital.

Required InformationEdit

  • Full name at birth of deceased
  • Date and place of birth if available
  • Place and date of death

Need for the DocumentEdit

The Death Certificate is the certificate certifying the death of a citizen in a given day. Death certificate is a document issued by the competent authority, specifically the Registry of Vital Records at the municipality of residence. The death certificate declares the date, place and cause of a person's death entered in an official register of deaths. In order to obtain a death certificate, the competent authority requires copies of the deceaseds personal ID, and tax code.

Information which might helpEdit

Under Italian law, records of births, marriages, and deaths are maintained by the Registrar of Vital Statistics (Ufficio dello Stato C ivile) in the c ity ( comune or m unicipio) where the event occurred. There is no central, regional, or provincial office established which keeps such records. When applying for one of these certificates, the applicant must supply all relevant information. The office of the registrar cannot undertake extensive research of its files to locate a record which is not properly identified, and will not translate requests in a foreign language. A request written in Italian usually produces faster results.

Other uses of the Document/CertificateEdit

Death certificate is a very useful document and is required under various circumstances e.g. succession, inheritance, future marriages e.t.c.
