Italy - Apply for an Emergency Travel Document
ProcedureEdit
- You must immediately report the loss or theft of your passport to the local police in order to later cross the border. You will be asked to present the Police Report later on when you apply for an ETD and when you apply for a replacement passport.
- Complete an application and submit it together with your two photos, travel ticket and proof that you have paid the application fee.
Notes:
- Applications for ETD may not be submitted on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays if the Consulate is closed. Except in cases of proven emergency, you will have to apply the next available working day.
- Honorary Consulates are not authorised to issue ETDs, and are limited to forwarding applications to the authorised Consulate and acting as the agent of their final delivery to the applicant, who is also liable for eventual mailing costs.
For citizens of European Union Member Countries
You may submit your application for an ETD at an Italian Embassy. You are application will need to approved by the diplomatic mission or Ministry of Foreign Affairs of your home country and upon submission of the following documentation:
- Report of the loss or theft of your passport or other travel document
- Two (2) identical, front-face, colour 35 x 40 mm photographs;
- Travel ticket;
- Proof that you have paid the application fee
- Local police report of the loss or theft of the document;

When you apply for an Emergency Travel Document (ETD), you must bring the following documents to the locally authorised Consulate:
- Report of the loss or theft of your passport or other travel document
- Two (2) identical, front-face, colour 35 x 40 mm photographs;

Need for the DocumentEdit
If your passport was lost or stolen and you have an immediate need to travel abroad and there is no time to apply for a new travel document, the you may apply for an Emergency Travel Document (ETD), which is valid only for your return to Italy (or to the country where you are legally residing). Only in exceptional cases can it be used for a different destination.
