ProcedureEdit

  1. Applicants must complete and sign the application form. Applicants will need someone to countersign their application (if required), someone who will act as a witness and who has known the applicant for at least two years.
  2. Applicants need to complete section 4 of the form if they were born, adopted, registered or naturalised in the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man. Applicants who have a link with the UK through a parent or grandparent born, adopted, naturalised or registered in the UK, need to provide as much information as possible. Applicants only need to provide details of one parent or grandparent, not all.
  3. Submit the application form along with two recent, identical photographs that meet the standard of the passport office (all passport application forms come with detailed guidelines on what is and is not acceptable). Present all supporting documents needed in the procedure.
  4. Pay the application fee.
  5. The old passport will be cancelled when a new one is issued. You will not be able to use the old passport, but it will be returned to you unless it has been defaced or altered. In these cases it will be destroyed and not returned to you.

Notes:

  • It is advisable for applicants not to book any travel arrangements until they have actually received their passport. The Passport Office will not accept responsibility for any travel the applicant booked before the passport was received.
  • Passport holders do not have to wait until their passport expires. The passport can be renewed at any time.
  • If there is any time left on the old passport, it can be carried over up to nine months validity to the new passport. No refund can be given for any unexpired time above nine months left in the old passport.

Processing TimeEdit

Standard service

It takes about 5 working days to process a passport application using the standard service. The amount of time to process an application may increase further during busy periods, particularly around school holidays.

The demand for the express passport services of 1 and 5 working days take priority, and consequently the service delivery time for standard applications increases making it difficult to give an exact delivery time on the standard service. Therefore applicants are advised to check the progress of their application with the Passport Office at least 5 working days before travel. This provides the opportunity to opt for the 5 day express service if necessary, rather than having to use the more expensive 1 day service.

Express Service

Applications submitted under the express service will be given priority.

Two express services are available:

  • Same day service: Applications received before 12:00 pm will be available for collection after 3:30 pm on the same day. Any applications received after 12:00 pm will not be available for collection until after 3:30 pm on the following day.
  • Five working days service: Applications will be available for collection after 3:30 pm on the fifth working day, example: if the application is submitted on a Monday it will be ready for collection from our office on the following Monday after 3:30 pm.

You cannot avail of the express service if:

  • You are an adult applying for a first time passport
  • You are applying to replace a lost or stolen passport
  • There is a mistake or missing information on your form
  • The Isle of Man passport office needs more time to consider a complex application
  • Circumstances beyond the reasonable control of the Isle of Man passport office

After you have submitted your application to obtain your first British passport, you should allow 6 weeks for your passport application to be processed as you may have to attend an interview.

Need for the DocumentEdit

A passport is a document, issued by the national government. It certifies the identity and nationality of the holder for travel abroad. It contains information about the holder; like name, gender, date and place of birth.

This document does not in itself entitle the passport holder entry into another country, nor consular protection while abroad nor any other privileges. However, it does normally allows the passport holder to return to the country where the passport was issued.

Rights to consular protection arises from international treaties, while the holder's return to the issuing country depends on the laws prevailing in that country.

Parents can no longer register their minor children under their name. Children must have their own passport.
