Need for the DocumentEdit
Subject to certain exemptions, you have a right to be told whether any information is held about you, and a right to be provided with a copy of the information. The Chief Officer of Police will only be able to provide that information if satisfied of your identity. You are not entitled to information identifying another individual, unless they agree. If you think that information might be held about you that may identify another person, you should get their prior agreement and send it in with your application.
Information which might helpEdit
Standard disclosure
Standard disclosure is available to anyone working with children and/or vulnerable adults together with certain other occupations and professions as specified in the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions Order) 1975 (UK legislation) and the Rehabilitation of Offenders (Exceptions) Order 2001. Standard disclosures show spent and unspent convictions, cautions, reprimands and warnings as held on the Police National Computer.
Enhanced disclosure
This is the highest level of criminal record check. It should only be applied for when an individual is expected to engage in regulated activity of a specified nature or in a specified place, frequently, intensively or overnight, or is engaged in a specified role.
In addition to the information contained in a standard disclosure, an enhanced disclosure will also contain any information which the relevant police force deems relevant and proportionate to the position applied for.
You may find that not all of the information held about you has been provided. This is because there are exemptions which may prevent the disclosure of information held by the Police in relation to:
- the prevention or detection of crime; or
- the apprehension or prosecution of offenders,
if providing the information would be likely to prejudice either of the above.
Other uses of the Document/CertificateEdit
If you are going to work as a paid employee, or as a volunteer for an organization, and your work will bring you into contact with children and/or vulnerable adults, you may be asked to apply for a DBS check. For example, if you are going to work as a teacher, care worker, scout or guide leader, registered childminder, sports coach, youth club worker, foster carer or adoptive parent.
The information contained in a criminal record check is highly confidential and the DBS has to be certain that the recruiting organization requesting a criminal records check on a prospective or existing employee is:
- entitled under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975 and the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions) Order 2001 to make a request, and
- suitable to store and handle such personal information for the purposes of either making a recruitment decision or updating staff record and is also able to meet its obligations.
