Here's how you can apply for a Non-Resident Trader Licence:

  1. You will need to complete an application form. A link to download the form is provided under 'Documents to Use' Section. Complete the form in BLOCK CAPITALS in a dark ink or in typescript. In case you need more space to complete any section of the form, you may use a separate sheet of paper putting the appropriate section number against your writing or typing.
  2. Attach a cheque payable to ISLE OF MAN GOVERNMENT.
  3. You will also need to include in your application a copy of your public liability insurance certificate to cover the period for which the licence is requested. And a copy of any advertisement likely to be published in connection with the proposed sale.
  4. Send the completed form, cheque to this address:

  5. The Office of Fair Trading will not issue to a trader unless it is satisfied that the trader is a fit and proper person. Note: The Office will conduct a police records check in relation to any person named on the application form.

EligibilityEdit

  • Traders who reside off-island but who choose to do occasional business on the Isle of Man are considered to be Non-Resident Traders (NRT)
  • A person resident in the Isle of Man shall be treated as a Non-Resident trader if he acts as an agent for a person who is not resident in the Isle of Man.


Individuals exempt from the requirements of the Non-Resident Traders Act are as follows:

  • Commercial travellers and other persons selling or seeking orders for goods from:
    • Persons who are dealers therein and who buy to sell again;
    • Persons who purchase such goods for use (other than resale) in their own businesses.
  • Persons who sell goods in a trade exhibition approved by the Office.
  • Any person selling, or exposing forsale, goods on behalf of a charitable or social organisation approved by the Office and authorised by that organisation to sell, or expose for sale, those goods.
  • Any person who has premises in the Island from which goods are ordinarily sold by retail throughout at least 2 months of the year and in respect of which that person pays a rate (the proof whereof shall lie on him) to the local authority for the district in which such premises are situate.

Current licence fees:£2,310 for the first three days for which the licence is valid and for each succeeding consecutive day you will need to pay £350
If the trader is attending an event certified by the Department of Economic Development as being of importance to the tourist industry AND the goods are directly related to the event, then the fee is reduced to £470 but is effective for the duration of the event only.

InstructionsEdit

As stated under Non-Resident Traders Act 1983, a trader who is not resident in the Isle of Man and who intends to sell or expose or offer for sale or seek orders for the sale of any goods to members of the public in the Island to must obtain a Non-Resident Traders Licence from the Office of Fair Trading.

Required InformationEdit

  • Name of applicant (if a partnership or sole trader give full names of each individual)
    • Partnership / sole trader - give the date and place of birth and current address of each individual
    • Body corporate - list names, date and place of birth and current address of the Company Secretary and Director
  • Body corporate, give Registered Office address:
    • Full address(es) of all the applicant's places of business outside the Isle of Man
    • How long you have been operating from the above address(es)
    • Description of the type of business carried on from the above address(es), i.e. import, wholesale, retail etc.
  • Name, date and place of birth and address of any person not already named on this application who can direct or influence the way in which the business is run
  • If the applicant/s have changed their names by deed poll, marriage or other means or have used other names, give full details in the order - title, full previous name, full current name
    • Details of any UK Consumer Credit Licence previously or presently held by any person named on this application
    • Details if any person mentioned in this application has ever been refused a licence under the UK Consumer Credit Act or had a licence cancelled or withdrawn
  • Name under which the business is to be carried on in the Isle of Man
    • Full address(es) of the applicant's intended place(s) of business in the Isle of Man
    • Period for which licence is require
    • Hours during which business will be conducted
    • Provide full name and permanent address of the "authorised representative" who has responsibility for the activities of the applicant whilst trading on the Isle of Man. The individual must be authorised to speak on behalf of the applicant and to receive documents.
    • Place at which authorised representative will be temporarily resident during licenced period
  • Full details of all goods to be offered for sale
  • In the case of electrical goods please provide details of the method arranged (i.e. local repair agent) for the service or repair of such items under the terms of the warranty
  • Value Added Tax number
  • Full names and addresses of any other person(s) not already named on this form who will be employed by the applicant on the Isle of Man

  • The licence holder shall at all reasonable times permit an authorised Officer access to his place of business to determine whether requirements of the Act are being complied with.
