Procedure

1. Applications can be made using the Internship Employment Permit application form.
2. Submit the completed application along with all required documents to the Employment Permits Section of the Department of Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation.
3. Pay the application fee.

Eligibility

Foreign (non-EEA) nationals who are full-time students, enrolled in a third level institution outside the State, for the purpose of gaining work experience.

Criteria

The Department of Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation examine a number of criteria when assessing Employment Permit applications:

• Remuneration must be National Minimum Wage or higher.
• The internship must be in respect of one of the employments on the Highly Skilled Eligible Occupations List.
• The course of study must be wholly or substantially concerned with the skills shortages identified on the Highly Skilled Eligible Occupations List.
• It must be a requirement for the completion of that course of study, to obtain experience in the practice of those skills or qualifications, in an employment that requires the practice of those skills or qualifications.
• At the end of the internship the employee must leave the State and it is expected that they will return to the third level institution to complete the course of study.

Fees

Duration of permit: Amount

• 6 months or less: 500
• 6 months up to 12 months: 1,000

Note:

• If an application is refused or withdrawn, 90% of the fee will be refunded to the applicant.

Validity

Internship Employment Permits can only be issued for a maximum period of 12 months and are non-renewable.

Instructions

Employment Permits are issued by the Department of Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation.

Who may apply for the permit: Either the foreign national or the employer can apply for an Internship Employment Permit and the Employment Permit is issued to the foreign national, and a certified copy sent to the employer, which permits his or her employment in the State by the employer in the occupation and location/s specified on the permit.

Need for the Document

In general, non-EEA nationals need to secure an employment permit to be able to work in Ireland. EEA and Swiss nationals do not need an employment permit.

Under the Employment Permits Acts 20032014 there are 9 types of employment permit one of which is Internship Employment Permit.

Internship Employment Permits are issued to non-EEA national full-time students who are enrolled in a third-level institution outside Ireland and have a work experience job offer in Ireland.
