The residence of foreign nationals in Iran is of two kinds: Temporary residence and permanent residency. A permanent resident is a foreigner who has resided in Iran on a permanent basis, otherwise the foreigner's stay in Iran will be temporary.

How to apply for permanent residence permit.
  1. Any foreigner who wishes to reside in Iran is required to complete and sign the application for a residence permit within 8 days after entering Iran.
  2. Visit the police of the provisional capital or in the town where you wish to reside in to make your application.
  3. Provide the required documents to the assisting agent who will verify your documents and ascertain your eligibility to reside in the country according to the Iranian Law.
  4. After validating your documents and eligibility, the agent will issue the residence permit in the context to Right to issue a temporary or permanent residence permit as provided for in Article 14 of the Law on the Entry and Residence of Foreign Nationals in Iran, and the same stamp shall be affixed to the residence permit. 
  5. Upon issuance of a residence permit, the police officer shall send a copy of the application for residence permit to the police station or gendarmerie district where the foreigner(you) resides in the area of ​​your protection, and the relevant police officer or jandarmary is required to keep this record for future reference.
Note that
  • Holders of a temporary or permanent residence permit must inform the city or gendarmerie of their place of work or residence within 8 days of entering the place of residence or new work in the city or the gendarmerie of the new place in writing. 
  • Any foreign national is required to provide a residence permit or other travel documents upon request by law enforcement officers. 
  • The issuance of a copy of the residence permit shall be in accordance with the law applicable to obtaining legal rights and attachment and revocation of the stamp. 
  • Foreigners shall be required to Submission of the application letter to the residence permit personally "or by the representative of the humanity of the place of visit
  • Application from abroad can be made to relevant Authorities of Iran, visit the nearest Iran Embassy for assistance.

InstructionsEdit

  • Permanent residence is issued for a foreigner who has chosen territory of Iran as its legal place of domicile, otherwise the residence of a foreign national is considered temporary. Permanent and temporary residence permit will be issued by Aliens Affairs Bureau of law enforcement forces, 8 days after arrival in Iran.
  • Foreign nationals are not allowed to remain in Iran longer than given permission in case of overstaying, offenders will be dealt according to the regulation.
