Iceland - Obtain Permit for Au Pairs

Obtaining the permit
- Gather all necessary documents you will need to submit in applying for the procedure.
- Download, fill out and sign the application form.
- Pay the processing fee.
- Submit your application via registered mail to the Directorate of Immigration, Skgarhl 6, 105 Reykjavk. Do not forget to include the payment receipt when you send in your application.
- The application for the permit must be approved before the applicant arrives in Iceland. If the applicant is present in Iceland when the application is submitted, it will not be processed until proof has been shown that he/she has left the country.
- If the permit is granted, an applicant who needs a visa shall obtain a D-Visa at the closest embassy issuing such visas on behalf of Iceland. The application must indicate in which embassy the applicant intends to collect the visa.
After arriving in Iceland
- Most foreigners need to go for a medical check-up and deliver a Medical Certificate to the Directorate after their arrival in Iceland. To know more
- The applicant must be able to present his/her passport at the Directorates office, or at the nearest District Commissioners office to be photographed.
- Once the medical certificate have been submitted and the photograph of the foreigner have been taken, the permit will be issued and the card sent to the applicants address.
- The date the permit was issued, marks the official beginning of residency in Iceland.
Required DocumentsEdit
- Completed Application Form
- A written contract/au-pair engagement agreement between the parties: The contract is only available at the Directorate of Immigration.
- One passport size photo of the applicant (35mmx45mm)
- A photocopy of the applicants passport: The validity of the passport must be at least three months beyond the proposed permit.
- Original Criminal Record of the applicant: The certificate must be issued by the country/countries where the applicant has resided for the past five years. Criminal Record Check must be dated no earlier than 6 months prior to being submitted to the Directorate. Please note that individuals who have resided in the U.S.A. or Canada during the past five years, intending to apply for a residence permit in Iceland, must submit a Criminal Record Check based on fingerprints issued by the Federal Bureau of Investigation in the U.S.A. and/or by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in Canada.
- Medical Insurance: Insurance must cover at least 2.000.000 Icel.kr., and shall be issued by an insurance company authorized to provide services in Iceland. The insurance must be in effect for 6 months.
- Proof of Financial Capacity: The host family must submit documents proving financial capability.
- Authorization: The applicant may grant an individual in Iceland authorization to enquire about his application.
- Housing Certificate: The applicant must prove that he/she has secure housing for the period of time applied for. The certificate must be signed by the home owner and witnessed by two adults.
Notes:
- All foreign documents issued in languages other than English or one of the Scandinavian languages, must be translated by an accredited interpreter.
- The Directorate may ask for authentication of foreign documents.

Conditions that must be met before a permit will be issued:
- Fulfilled the basic conditions for a residence permit, example: that financial support, medical insurance and housing is secure.
- The applicant shall not be younger than 18 years and no older than 25 years.
- A signed contract between the applicant and the host family.
- The host family shall provide free housing and meals to the applicant.
- The au-pair shall have a separate room in the household.
- The host family shall pay for the applicants travel back to the home country at the end of the contract.
- The applicant shall be granted adequate time for studying Icelandic and for pursuing his/her personal hobbies/interests.
FeesEdit
Permit application fee, for person over the age of 18:
- First issue of the permit: 12,000 ISKR
- Renewal of the permit: 6,000 ISKR
- Permanent Residence permit: 12,000 ISKR
Permit application fee, for person under the age of 18:
- First issue of the permit: 6,000 ISKR
- Renewal of the permit: 3,000 ISKR
- Permanent Residence permit: 6,000 ISKR
Notes:
- If the applicant decided to withdraw his/her application or if the application is denied, the application fee paid by the applicant may not be refunded.
- Be advised that your bank may charge a processing fee for international transfers and if that fee is not paid separately, the bank will withdraw it from your transferred amount. This results in insufficient funds being transferred to the Icelandic Directorate of Immigration. Therefore the processing of your application will be delayed until the complete processing fee have been paid.
- Bank fees are not yet included in the amounts above.

Do not forget to print out the payment receipt and send it with your application.
When depositing your payment, you must provide your birthday and name, the same info printed on your passport.
ValidityEdit
Permit issued to au-pairs is granted for a maximum period of one year and is non-renewable.
Au-pair permit is not taken into consideration in applying for a permanent residence permit.

Processing TimeEdit
It may take about 90 days (on the average) from the date all necessary documents were received by the Directorate to process your application. If supporting documents are missing or inadequate, processing time may be longer.

Need for the DocumentEdit
Residence Permit issued to au pairs are considered to be a cultural exchange which is neither categorized as a student nor a regular work permit. It is unlikely that a foreigner will apply for this category to stay in the home of a family member, as that could hardly be considered to be the purpose of this type of permit.
