Obtaining the permit

  1. Application for a permanent residence permit must be submitted at least one month before the current permit expires.
  2. Gather all necessary documents you will need to submit in applying for the procedure.
  3. Download, fill out and sign the application form.
  4. The applicant will be photographed when applying for a permanent residence permit and must be able to present his/her passport.
  5. When processing of the application is completed, the applicant will be advised by written notification.


Permanent residence permits for children under the age of 18:

  • The only requirements other than the application form (signed by parent/legal guardian) is a copy of the childs passport. Children who have been issued a permanent residence permit may be employed without a work permit until the age of 18. Upon turning 18 years old, the individual shall apply for a permanent work permit if he/she intends to work in Iceland.

Required DocumentsEdit

  • Filled out Application form for a permanent residence permit, signed by the applicant.
  • Photocopy of the applicants passport/travel document: The passport must still be valid.
  • Certified copies of the applicants tax returns for the previous four years: Those who submit their tax reports electronically to Internal Revenue Directorate (RSK) can send a certified copy in pdf form to the Directorate by e-mail to [email protected]
  • Certificate from the applicants Icelandic language course: The applicant shall provide original documentation showing that he/she has completed 150 hours of Icelandic language studies, or taken a test attesting his/her proficiency in the Icelandic language at an accredited institution.
  • A signed employment contract (if applying for unlimited work permit).
  • Paychecks for the last three months/proof of support.
  • Social Services Certificate. The applicant must submit a certificate from the applicable municipal services, indicating whether or not he/she has received any financial social support for the past four years.

EligibilityEdit

Conditions that must be met by the applicant:

  • The applicant has attended a course in Icelandic for foreigners.
  • There are no circumstances which may cause the applicant to be deported.
  • Secure financial circumstances.
  • The applicant has held the same types of residence permits for 4 years preceding his/her application and that the provisions for issuing such a residence permit still apply.
  • The applicant does not have any outstanding cases in the criminal justice system wherein he/she is a suspect or have been charged with a punishable act.



FeesEdit

Permit application fee, for person over the age of 18:

  • First issue of the permit: 12,000 ISKR
  • Renewal of the permit: 6,000 ISKR
  • Permanent Residence permit: 12,000 ISKR


Permit application fee, for person under the age of 18:

  • First issue of the permit: 6,000 ISKR
  • Renewal of the permit: 3,000 ISKR
  • Permanent Residence permit: 6,000 ISKR


Notes:

  • If the applicant decided to withdraw his/her application or if the application is denied, the application fee paid by the applicant may not be refunded.
  • Be advised that your bank may charge a processing fee for international transfers and if that fee is not paid separately, the bank will withdraw it from your transferred amount. This results in insufficient funds being transferred to the Icelandic Directorate of Immigration. Therefore the processing of your application will be delayed until the complete processing fee have been paid.
  • Bank fees are not yet included in the amounts above.

When depositing your payment, you must provide your birthday and name, the same info printed on your passport.

Do not forget to print out the payment receipt and send it with your application.



ValidityEdit

The permanent residence permit ceases to be valid when the holder has been living in another country for continuous period of more than 18 months.

Processing TimeEdit

It may take about 90 days (on the average) from the date all necessary documents were received by the Directorate to process your application. If supporting documents are missing or inadequate, processing time may be longer.

When processing of the application is completed, the applicant will be advised by written notification.
