Procedure

1. To apply for a driver license, you would have to register yourself with a driving school in Iceland and make sure you have covered all the lessons that has been taught by them. If your driving schools are satisfied with your driving skills they would recommend you to apply for a driver license.
2. You would have to go through an oral test and a practical test.
3. The pratical test is divided into 2 which also has an oral test in itself.
4. You also have to make sure you have all the documents that are listed under "Required Documents" section of this page.

In case of icelandic abroad
If you are icelander and would like to apply for a Icelandic driver license, you would have to contact the Icelandic embassy in the country where you live to apply for a driver license.

Required Documents

• Photo (35 x 45 mm) that resembles the applicant well. The film must be durable photographic, flag and stamps available. It is not allowed to send pictures electronically and it is not possible for the use of the photos have been taken for use in passports.
• Statement by the applicant for health or medical. The application of rights for categories A, B, BE, M and T sufficient health declaration alone, unless a magistrate deems necessary medical or if the applicant has reached the age of 65. Must be a medical certificate when applying for rights for categories C, CE, D and DE, and to transport passengers commercially.
• Written declaration driving examiner to complete their driving lessons has been carried out for a review of their driving lessons.

Eligibility

• Applicants can see and hear well enough and is otherwise sufficiently qualified spiritually and physically.
• The applicant has been teaching a certified driving examiner proven by the test that he has enough driving ability and necessary knowledge of the vehicle and traffic law.
• The applicant has resided in the country. This does not apply to the issue of duplicate driving license, a temporary driving source, an international driving license and to issue permanent license and renewal of license.
• The driver had a provisional consecutive year.
• The driver was not in the last 12 months had points in the points system for traffic violation or without kurttar of deprivation.
• The driver has been a driving and got to the completion of review where a driving examiner recommended the issue of the permanent license.

Fees

The fee for the license (full license) for categories A, B, BE, C, CE, D and DE and passenger commercial is 5.900 kr. For license 65 years and over 1,650 kr.

Instructions

• A permanent license for categories A, B and BE (driver's license to drive a passenger car) are issued for 15 years.
• A permanent license for categories C, CE, D and DE and passenger commercial (further driving - more testing) are issued for five years. Beyond the period of such certificates retain its force in respect of the right to drive a sedan.
