ProcedureEdit

Before you start renewing your license online, you should have the following ready:

  • A valid personal digital certificate issued by a recognised Certification Authorities or Renewal Password issued by the Transport Department for authentication.
  • You will need to have a credit card (Visa or MasterCard) or a PPS account number and Internet password for payment. Both Visa and MasterCard offer additional security programs to give their cardholders extra protection when they make online payments. You must register in advance with Verified by Visa (VbV) or MasterCard SecureCode.
  • You must also have a printer, for printing the acknowledgement receipt.
  • An image file of proof of present address (example: water/ electricity/gas/ mobile phone bill or bank correspondence) which is issued not older than 3 months.
  • An image file of the Hong Kong Permanent Identity Card: for renewal of full driving licence with commercial vehicle class(es).


For successful applications, the Transport Department will send your new license to your correspondence address by registered post within 10 working days.

EligibilityEdit

Driving licenses can be renewed online if it is due to expire within the next 4 months or has expired within the past 3 years.

Licenses that expired more than 3 years ago cannot be renewed, you will have to obtain a learners driving licence and take a road test again in order to obtain a license. Applicants in this case, however, are exempted from taking the written test.



FeesEdit

Renewal Fee (for holders aged 60 or below): HK$900


For licenses issued to those aged above 60 to 67:

Required fee is calculated as follows:

{ [Annual license fee ($52) x no. of years during the validity period (less than 1 year is counted as 1 year)] + [Annual levy for Traffic Accident Victims Assistance Fund (TAVA) ($38) x no. of days during the validity period (if the validity period is not in full years, the required fee for the remaining days (less than 1 year) refer to the [table]}
Example: an applicant whose date of birth is 21 June 1942, and current full driving licence will expire on 11 June 2007, applies for full driving licence on 23 April 2007, i.e. he is of age about 64 years and 10 months on the date of application. His renewed full driving licence will be effective from 12 June 2007 until 20 June 2012 (i.e. there are 5 years and 9 days before he attains the age of 70). The fee required for renewal of his full driving licence is: {[$52 x 6 ] + [$38 x 5 + $1]} = $503


For 3-year licenses issued to applicants aged over 67: HK$270



ValidityEdit

Renewed full driving licenses for holders aged 60 and below are valid for a period of 10 years.

For licenses holders aged above 60 but below 70 on the date of application:

  • Validity Period : upon expiry of the current license up to the day before the applicant attains the age of 70 or for a period of 3 years, whichever is longer
Example: If the applicant is over the age of 67 but less than 70, his full driving licence will be issued for a period of 3 years.

For those aged 70 or above: Applicants may choose between a license valid for 1 year or a 3-year license.
