Procedure

Apply In-Person:

1. To Upgrade or Add Category to Driver License, the applicant has to approach the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority Head Office in Ghana.
2. The contact and address details of the approved Vehicle Licensing Offices for each state in Ghana can be found in the following page. contact link
3. Obtain the necessary forms to be completed for Changing Vehicle Ownership from the concerned department and complete with required information under relevant sections.
4. Complete the application form(s) as required and attach the required documents with the completed form(s).
5. Applicant must make sure to carry all necessary documents that are mentioned under “Required Documents” section of this page. (Both photocopies and originals)
6. Please refer to the fees details in the “Fees” section of this page.
7. Make an appointment for the written test and road signs test for the additional upgrade that you are requesting.
8. Successful applicants from the above tests are scheduled for in-traffic test the following day. Payment for this test is done on the test date.
9. If applicant is successful from the in-traffic test, make payment for applicant’s driver’s license to any of the cashiers and proceed to sign the license register.
10. Submit the form(s) and documents to the concerned department at the office for further verification processes.
11. Once the verification and validation processes are over, the application will be approved and the officials will proceed with updated driver license.
12. After successful completion of required documents the upgrade of license will be processed on the same day.

• Completed forms (as required)
• Driving License
• Valid Learner’s License for which additional class of vehicle is required.
• Documents of vehicle in which applicant proposes to appear for test of competence to drive (such as Registration Certificate, Insurance Certificate, Tax Card, Pollution under Control Certificate, Fitness Certificate in case of Transport Vehicle).
• Consent letter from vehicle owner, to conduct driving test in his vehicle if the vehicle is not owned by the applicant.
• Passport size photographs-3 copies

Eligibility

• The person should have a valid driving license.
• Should have completed 20 years of age for Transport Vehicles with 1 year experience.

Fees

• Fees link
• The amount of fees payable to upgrade the driving license is .GHS. 250/- (fee).

Validity

• A Driving License for a non transport vehicle is valid up to a period of 20 years or an age of 50 years whichever is earlier, and 5 years thereafter.
• Transport Vehicle License is valid for a period of 3 years from the date of issue or renewal.

Need for the Document

• The need for upgrading from a valid driving license arises for the purpose of driving other vehicles. Other vehicles refer to the ones that are not covered under the current license.
• If a person who has a valid driving license to drive non transport vehicle and wanted to drive transport vehicle, then one needs to get his driving license upgraded.
