Procedure

Apply In-Person

1. To Renew Health Insurance and Health Membership organisation (HMO) in Ghana, the applicants has to approach the Ghana National Health Insurance Authority office contact link
2. Pick an application form for insurance renewal Licence, fill the form and submit all relevant requirements together with the remittance of 3,000,000 GHS. The completed application form should be returned to Insurance regulatory authority.
3. Applicant should attach all relevant documents in the application form and they can be found under the "Required Documents" section of this page.
4. Payment of appropriate fees should be made and that can be found under the "Fees" section of this page.
5. Application for insurance renewal Licence must be made in the name of a person or a corporation and submitted on a standard form as prescribed by the Authority.
6. The application form must be submitted together with other required documents and the proposed insurance plans which must comply with minimum standards as specified in insurance Act.
7. The Authority shall, for the purpose of considering and making a report on an application, appoint a committee of not less than three members of the Authority which committee shall report its recommendations to the Authority in writing.
8. After a report from the Committee, considering all the formalities to be successful, the applicant will be informed to collect the renewal insurance. Collect the renewal Licence from the Insurance regulatory Authority of Ghana.
9. The Processing time for this procedure is 1 month.

Required Documents

• Documentary Proof of membership (copy of membership certificate).
• Certificate of Health Insurance and Health Membership organisation (HMO)
• Audited accounts returns for the recent time.
• Submit the management accounts endorsed with the external Auditor.
• Financial statements and regulatory returns and reports for HMO.
• In the case of foreign applicant, applicant will avail the immigrant status of all your non Ghanaian employees. i.e photocopy and originals work permit.
• Recent passport size photograph of the applicant.
• Evidence of membership to the insurance institute of Ghana.
• Certificate of proficiency.
• Clearance letter from the insurance institute of Ghana.
• Any other relevant information that may be required.

Eligibility

• Any person carrying out Health business in Ghana is eligible for Health insurance license renewal.
• Members of HMO Association MUST produce certificate of Membership to be eligible for renewal Licence.

Fees

• Application Fees: 500,000 GHS- Registration
• Renewal Fee: 3,000,000 GHS.

Validity

• Licences issued will be valid for a period of 1 year.

Need for the Document

• A person shall not carry on insurance business, reinsurance business or the business of a HMO in Ghana without a valid licence issued by the Authority.

• The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) is mandated by National Health Insurance Act, 2012 (Act 852) to regulate Private Health Insurance Schemes (PHIS) in Ghana. The Authority registers, licenses and supervises the operations of PHIS in Ghana.
