Ghana - Re-register a Motor Vehicle (Change Plate Category)

Apply In-Person:

  1. Applicant who would like to Re-register a Motor Vehicle (Change Plate Category) in Ghana, the applicant should contact the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) in Ghana. Contact link
  2. First the applicants need to get No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the RTO where the Vehicle is already registered.
  3.  Apply for NOC where the vehicle is registered with the required documents. Please make sure that the applicant has all the documents that are listed down the “Required Document” section of this page.
  4. After few days, the applicant will get his/her NOC from the RTO.
  5. Then the applicant must obtain the application form for re-register a motor cycle.
  6. Then apply for change of address and re-registration in the new state RTO with the filled in application forms and the required documents.
  7. Please make sure that the applicant has the pay the fees that are listed down the “fees” section of this page.
  8. Attach all the required documents with the application form and submit them to the Secretary of the Board.
  9. After all process is satisfied, the new registration number or certificate will be issued to the applicant.
  10. The processing time for this procedure takes 30 days.

  • Present vehicle documents to CEPS Officials for verification & release.
  • Present released documents to DVLA office for vehicle inspection.
  • Provide proof of identity.
  • Original logbook
  • Old registration plate

  • Physical verification report of the motor vehicle
  • Certificate of incorporation in case of a company
  • Covering letter in case the applicant is a company
  • TCC in case of PSV and commercial vehicle

  • Motor vehicle : GHS 223,000
  • Other motor vehicle trailer, tractors or engineer plants : GHS 104,000
  • Inspection fees for motor cycle : GHS 7,000
  • Inspection fees for motor vehicle : GHS 12,000
  • Personalized plate : GHS 6,000,000

  • As long as the Motorcycle is not transferred, registration is valid forever.

  • The MOT or DVLA deals with motor vehicles from the time they are manufactured or imported to the time they are disposed or exported.
  • Vehicle registration can be done in most MOT or DVLA offices nationwide and at selected vehicle registration offices in Ghana.

Need for the DocumentEdit

  • It acts as a document proving the registration of the applicant’s motor vehicle. In Ghana, it is essential for a vehicle owner to obtain a registration certificate as the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 makes it mandatory for every vehicle owner to have a valid RC to be able to drive a motor vehicle on Ghanaian roads.
