Procedure

Apply In-Person:

1. The first thing applicant should do to obtain a license to operate a private museum is to ensure that all facilities of a private museum meet by national museum of Ghana.
2. The second thing applicant should do is to send a written application to national museum of Ghana showing that you have facilities which qualifies to be used as a museum within the meaning of the law. Applicant should also provide evidence of the same.
3. The third thing is to confirm that you already have in your possession a substantial collection of items for exhibition.
4. That the applicant is able to provide professional and authoritative expertise and advice in relation to the proposed activities of the museum to the public.
5. The applicant on addition to expertise should ensure that he/she has a tenure building in which the proposed museum is to be located.
6. The application should as well indicate the proposed name and qualification of the proposed curator for the Museum.
7. The applicant must show by proof the source of funding, cost and the proposed bankers.
8. The Authority shall discuss with the applicant, sign a contract before the private museum is permitted to operate.
9. Also, make sure that you have all the documents listed in the “Required documents” section of this page.
10. Payment of appropriate fees should be made and that can be found under the "Fees" section of this page.
11. Pay relevant fees, depending on the requirements from officers from Ghana Revenue Authority and attach a copy of the pay slip from the Bank on the application.
12. Submit the application along with all required documents, to national museum of Ghana a duly completed and signed by the applicant.
13. Once approved by the national museum of Ghana, the Legal officer of the Board shall issue License to operate a private museum to the applicant.

Instructions

An application for a license is considered in regard to;

• The legal status of the applicant, including, in the case of a corporate person.
• Whether the items collected and exhibited in the proposed museum shall be alive or non-live.
• Whether the materials are secured in the long-term for the public benefit.
• Whether the applicant has formal arrangements to manage and exhibit the collection and
• Whether the materials in the collection were acquired following the appropriate law.
• The applicant should demonstrate access to full time professional conservation advice for the maintenance of the museum.
• The applicant should provide evidence that the museum has taken adequate steps to ensure the safety and security of the collection.
