Procedure

Apply In-Person:

1. To Obtain License to Discharge Treated Waste into the Environment in Ghana, the applicant has to approach the Accra Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) office.

3. An applicant has to approach the EPA office and applicant can get their application form.
4. Applicant has to enter all information in the application form.
5. Applicant must provide all necessary information in the application form.
6. Make sure you have all the documents mentioned in “Required Documents” section of this page.
7. Payment of appropriate fees should be made and that can be found under the "Fees" section of this page.
8. Applicant should attach photocopies of documents (whichever is necessary) along with the application form while submitting the application form.
9. Fee for this procedure has to be paid as per the authority request and submit the receipt as a proof of payment.
10. Once the verification of document is done the authority will issue the license in 51days.
11. The applicant is intimated to collect the license once it is ready by receiving SMS or E- mail or you can directly contact the office by the contact details given in the “Office Locations & Contacts” section of this page.

Eligibility

• Every local authority or person operating a sewage system or owner or operator of any trade or industry discharging wastewater into the environment.

Fees

Application for discharge of effluent into the environment for all facilities is GHS. 5000.00
Annual license fees for discharge of effluent into the environment: -

• Sewerage service providers - GHS.500, 000.00
• Discharging facilities listed under fourth schedule GHS.100,000.00
• Institutions GHS. 20,000.00

Others GHS.10, 000.00

• Inspection of records/effluent register -GHS.200.00
• Variation of effluent discharge license - 10% of the annual license fee

Validity

• This license validity is for 1 year.

• Whether the facility has access to a Laboratory for monitoring the quality of discharged effluent.

• Point of discharge
• Declaration by applicant

Need for the Document

• The license is issued by the National Environment Management Authority allow local authority or person operating a sewage system or owner or operator of any trade or industry to discharge treated wastewater into the environment.

Information which might help

• An application for an effluent discharge licence should be accompanied by the prescribed fee as set out in the Regulations.
• The decision of the Authority together is communicated to the applicant within thirty working days from the date of submission of the duly completed application.
• Where the Authority approves an application for the grant of an effluent discharge licence it shall issue an effluent discharge licence within twenty-one days.
