Apply In-Person

  1. To Get Fund from Private Health Insurance Scheme in Ghana, the applicants has to approach the Ghana National Health Insurance Authority office contact link
  2. Applicant must obtain the required application form Link
  3. Applicant must provide all the necessary information in the application form.
  4. The applicant has to make sure he or she has all the required documents that are required for this process to be successful and they can be found under the "Required Documents" section of this page.
  5. Applicant should attach photocopies of documents (whichever is necessary) along with the applicant form while submitting it at the office.
  6. A fee for this procedure is has to be paid as per as authority’s request.
  7. Submit the completed forms along with the supporting documents at the respective office for verification and processing.
  8. If all above mentioned procedures were followed properly by the applicant, the application form will be viewed by concerned authorities and the applicant will be notified regarding their fund.
  9. If there is no information regarding the application, then, the applicant can visit the office to know status of the application.
  10. Generally, the processing time for this procedure is takes up to 9 weeks.

An application for registration shall be submitted with the following:

  • Application form Link
  • Two copies of:
    • The Constitution of PMHIS or
    • The Regulations of PCHIS
  • Certified true copy of certificate of incorporation
  • Certified true copy of certificate to commence business
  • Share certificates
  • Group structure detailing applicant’s position in the group (if applicable)
  • A Business Plan which must contain at the minimum:
    • Detailed information on the Governing Body which shall be responsible for the direction of policies of the scheme and appointment of employees such as a Principal Officer/Managing Director (which may be an independent body corporate or a committee) and other officers who shall be responsible for the management of the scheme. In addition to directors, shareholders and senior management staff of PHIS must be “fit and proper”. Refer to Appendices 5, 6 and 7 for the requirements of composition of boards, management and “Personal Questionnaire Forms”.
  • Statement of the target market and the proposed minimum number of persons to be covered by the PMHIS.
  • Proposed NHIA credentialed healthcare providers and healthcare facilities to be used by the scheme.
  • Financial projections for the first five (5) years which must show the financial viability of the scheme.
  • Marketing strategy
  • Underwriting strategy
  • Investment strategy
  • Exit strategy
  • Outsourcing strategy
  • Risk Management strategy which shall include re-insurance
  • Any other relevant information that may be required.

EligibilityEdit

  • A scheme does not qualify to apply to operate a private health insurance scheme unless it is registered and incorporated under the Companies Act, 1963 (Act 179) as a:
    • Limited liability company in the case of PCHIS or
    • Company limited by guarantee in the case of PMHIS
  • Where a commercial health insurance company is solely owned by non-Ghanaian, a minimum of 15% of the shares shall be owned by Ghanaians.

  • The NHIS in Ghana is a government-sponsored social health insurance scheme funded primarily by taxation through the National Health Insurance Levy (70%), social security contributions (17%), investment income (8%), and premiums and registration fees (5%).
