Procedure

Apply In-Person:

1. Applicant has to approach the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority Head Office in Ghana and applicant can get their application form for Cancel or Delete a Vehicle Registration Contact link
2. Applicant has to enter all the information in the application form.
3. Make all the necessary payments to obtain application forms and all the necessary documents.
4. Applicants are required to completely fill and submit the form.
5. Documents that are needed for this procedure are mentioned under “Required Documents” section of this page.
6. Payment of appropriate fees should be made and that can be found under the "Fees" section of this page.
7. Please consult with the Department of Road Transport and Safety Offices.
8. Attach the following documents to the forms before submitting application to the authority.
9. On application by the owner of the vehicle, upon exchange/transfer of ownership or where the vehicle has been destroyed, broken up, or has left Ghana permanently.
10. Where the Department of Road Transport and Safety Director has reason to believe that a vehicle registered has been destroyed, broken up, or has left Ghana permanently.
11. Cancellation by the Director of Department of Road Transport and Safety:
    • The Director may, by notice either in writing or personal, express his intent to cancel the registration of a vehicle if, at any time, it is proved to his satisfaction that a vehicle registered has been destroyed, broken up, or has left Ghana permanently.
    • If before the elapse of one month from the date of service of such notice the registered owner fails to satisfy the Director that such vehicle has not been destroyed, broken up, or has not left Ghana permanently, the Director shall cancel the registration thereof forth with.
    • Where the Director cancels the registration of a vehicle, the registered owner of the vehicle shall within 10 days thereafter hand or send the registration book in respect thereof to the Director for cancellation.
12. Cancellation by the owner of the vehicle:
    • The owner of a registered vehicle shall file the application to cancel a vehicle registration, in such a manner as prescribed by the Department of Road Transport and Safety.
    • Applicants will be required to submit all the relevant certified supporting documentation as may be requested by the Authority in addition to the original vehicle registration booklet and identification document.
    • Upon receipt of the application, the Department of Road Transport and Safety registration & licensing office will check for discrepancies or ineligibility in the application documents. If a discrepancy that cannot be immediately corrected exists in any of the documents, the application and all the submitted documents will be returned to the applicant and should not be re-submitted until the discrepancy has been rectified.
    • Applicants are issued with an acknowledgment letter/ receipt as a proof of submission of the application file and for inquiry referencing if the need arises.
    • After successful document evacuation phase the vehicle registration will be cancelled and the owner of the vehicle will be notified by the department licensing and registration office and required he (owner) will be required surrender the original vehicle registration booklet and remove the vehicle’s Ghana license plate and have it destroyed.
13. Generally, the processing time for this procedure takes 3 months.
