Ghana - Apply for a License to Operate a University

Apply In-Person:

  1. Applicants go to National School Inspectorate Authority (NaSIA) and applicants can get their application form for License to Operate a University. contact link
  2. Applicant has to enter all the information in the application form.
  3. The applicant has to make sure that he or she has all the required documents that are required for this process to be successful and they can be found under the "Required Documents" section of this page.
  4. Payment of appropriate fees should be made and that can be found under the "Fees" section of this page.
  5. Before application for Licensing:
    • University must be registered at the Registrar General’s Department.
    • University must be registered at the Local Authority where it is located.
    • Applicant needs to make payment to fill the form. Payment details will be required when filling the school licensing application form.
    • Applicant must make sure to carry all necessary documents that are mentioned under “Required Documents” section of this page. (Both photocopies and originals)
  6. After a successful application for licensing, the applicant would be notified:
    • A notice of date for inspection of the school will be communicated to management of the school not less than one week before the inspection.
    • In case of any unforeseen circumstance which hinders the possibility of inspection on the agreed date, management of the school would be duly informed and a new date will be scheduled.
    • Inspectors from NaSIA would be panelled to verify that the school meets the required standards set by the NaSIA.
    • The team of Inspectors will then require submitting a report on the inspection to the Inspector-General of Schools for final approval.
  7. The processing time for this procedure takes 30-45 days.

EligibilityEdit

  • The schools in Ghana must be in accordance with the Societies Act of 1860 or by a trust that has been organized as per the Public Trust Act of individual states.
  • A private entity willing to set up a school in Ghana can also set up a company as prescribed by Section 8 of the Companies Act 2013.

  • A fee for this procedure and register has to be paid as per the authority’s request.

  • The National Schools Inspectorate Authority (NaSIA) is an Agency of the Ministry of Education responsible for providing an independent external evaluation of the quality and standards in basic and second cycle educational institutions.
