Procedure

Apply In-Person

1. Applicant who would like to Apply for Electricity Connection should contact the customer service centre of electricity company of Ghana or energy company in Ghana contact link
2. Applicant approach the electricity office and the applicant must request for new electricity connection, also, applicant get their application form for new electricity connection.
3. Applicant must make sure to carry all the necessary documents that are mentioned under “Required Documents” section of this page. (Both photocopies and originals)
4. Payment of appropriate fees should be made and that can be found under the "Fees" section of this page.
5. Submit the completed form along with documents to section engineer/assistant engineer.
6. All the documents will be verified by the concerned authority. A receipt cum Quotation for Earnest Money will be issued.
7. Technician will inspect the building and the locality to ascertain pole placement.
8. Applicant will get the advice for fixing the meter at a convenient place in the ground floor with easy accessibility for inspection. (All storied buildings, irrespective of the number of floors have to provide place for fixing meter in the ground floor.)
9. Once applicant completes the required arrangement in the building, applicant will have to make prescribed charges payable.
10. Once the payment is made, the department authority will do the erection and extension of electrical supply to the premises. Connection will be provided by fixing the electricity meter after getting the electricity wiring installation has been completed and tested certificate from licensed contractor.
11. Respective department engineer will visit the building and inspects the premises for the provided details.
12. After all the successful completion, consumer will get notice to avail the supply.
13. The processing time for this procedure is 3 or 5 days.

Required Documents

• Application form
• Property of tax receipts
• Certified copy of proof of ownership of the property, such as sale deed.
• If the applicant is not the property’s owner, consent letter from the owner in form format or valid proof of occupancy.
• Indemnity bond in form are required.
• If the applicant requires a load of more than 112KW, he/she needs to scan the undertaking form and submit the PDF.
• National identification card.
• Residential address proof
• Signed by the licensed Electrician who under took the wiring of the Customers house or premises.
• A development or Building Permit issued by the relevant Metropolitan, Municipal or District Assembly (SHEP Areas are Exempt) from this requirement.

Eligibility

• The owner of the proposed property for which the supply is required
• If the applicant is not the owner of the premises for which supply is required, then he or she should produce a consent letter from the owner of the premise
• If the owner is not available or not intended to give consent letter, then the applicant should provide:
  • Proof of his/her being in lawful occupation of the premises.
  • Execute an indemnity bond as required.
    
  • Acceptances to pay security deposit twice the normal rate.
    

Fees

• Charge differs with requirement. So, authorities estimate will give actual figure for getting connection.

Validity

• Electricity connection will exist till the premises exist.

Instructions

• The enactment of the Electricity Corporation Decree, 1967 (NLCD 125) and the repeal of the Electricity Act, established the Electricity Corporation of Ghana (ECG). For the next two decades, ECG was to remain the entity solely responsible for electricity supply and the distribution networks nationwide.

Need for the Document

• The person who needs electricity supply should pay to the Distribution Licensee. The appropriate authority may determine this price. The terms and conditions for obtaining connection include the fact that the occupant must be in lawful occupation of the premises and also execute an indemnity bond in the form prescribed by the Board.

• In Ghana the standard voltage is 230v and the frequency is 50 MHz the applicant can use his/her electric appliances in Ghana, if the standard voltage in his/her company is in between 220-240 v (as is in the UK, Europe, Australia and most of Asia and Africa).
