Procedure

Apply In-Person:

1. To Apply for Dual Citizenship in Ghana, the applicant has to approach the Ministry of the Interior in Ghana. Link
2. Before you apply for the Dual citizenship go to the district or Municipality and request for a form to register as a National of Ghana, and if you are outside Ghana go to the nearest embassy near your home country or High Commission or Consulate or ministry of interior. After a acquiring a national identity card of Ghana, then you can apply for citizenship in the normal way. Check with the countries consulate or high commission in Ghana to find out about that countries laws on dual nationality.
3. Applicants are required to complete a Dual Nationality Application Form at a cost of $200. The Form has to be fully completed before submission to the Embassy and onward transmission to the Ministry of Interior in Accra.
4. Applicant must make sure to carry all necessary documents that are mentioned under “Required Documents” section of this page. (Both photocopies and originals)
5. Payment of appropriate fees should be made and that can be found under the "Fees" section of this page.
6. Application forms can be obtained from the Embassy in your home country and the Ghana's Permanent Mission located in various countries. Attach photocopies of supporting documents and Prospective applicants who live outside the locations indicated above and wish to purchase the form can send money order of $200 per form to the Embassy with a note requesting for the Dual Nationality Application Form. Include a self address and traceable return envelope.
7. Dual Citizenship Application forms can only be picked and submitted (upon completion) on Wednesdays between 9.30am and 1.00pm at the High gate Office.
8. On acquiring the dual citizenship status, applicants would be entitled to apply for a Ghanaian passport besides the passport of the other country whose citizenship they have already acquired.
9. Under the Dual citizenship law, it is an offence for a dual citizenship holder to use two passports interchangeably to deceive an immigration officer.
10. Those who violate the law would be liable on summary conviction to a fine not exceeding 250 penalty units or a term of imprisonment not exceeding a year or both.
11. In this connection, all dual citizens are required to travel only with their certificates of Dual Citizenship and only one passport of their choice. It is anticipated that successful applicants would be able to receive their certificates within six months.

Fees

• Application form cost $200.
• All applicants are required to complete a Dual Citizenship application form and processing fees of 130.00.Renunciation fee shall be 325.00.

Need for the Document

• Dual citizenship certificate provides the individual the right to obtain passports from either country of citizenship.
• Dual citizenship is allowed in Ghana for any Ghanaian citizen who acquires a citizenship of another country. The dual citizen does not lose their Ghanaian citizenship by reason acquisition of a second citizenship.

In accordance with the Citizenship Act of 2002 (Act 591), Ghanaians who have acquired foreign Citizenship, are eligible to apply for dual citizenship in Ghana. This means you can be a Ghanaian citizen and also a citizen of other countries.
Every country decides whom it considers to be a citizen. If more than one country recognizes you as a citizen, you have dual citizenship. You do not apply for dual citizenship and there is no related certificate. Ghanaian is allowed to take foreign citizenship while keeping their Ghanaian citizenship.
