Procedure

Apply In person

1. To Apply for Passport in Ghana, the applicant has to approach the Ghana Visa Application Centre (VAC) or Ghana immigration service office contact link
2. Then, the applicant must obtain the application form from Ghana Visa Application Centre (VAC) or Ghana immigration service office.
3. Fill up the application form. Do not forget to affix your right thumb print and sign the form. Please avoid making erasures on the form, erasures may result to your application being rejected. Exercise extreme caution in completing the forms as mistakes cannot be corrected once the passport has been issued.
4. Submit the completed application form along with all other required documents in person to the nearest Immigration office in your locality.
5. Ask the Immigration officer-in-charge to examine all submitted documents and check to see if the application form was duly completed. Inspection of documents must be done in his/her presence.
6. Payment of appropriate fees should be made and that can be found under the "Fees" section of this page.
7. The date of collection of passport shall be written on his/her payment receipt.
8. Between the immigration office and the passport office his/her application will be processed for issue.
9. The Passport Office shall inform his/her in writing in case there are any queries regarding him/her application.
10. His/her passport shall be ready for pick up within 30 days upon submission of the application form and all other required documents.
11. Collect your biometric Passport in person from the District or Regional Immigration Office in his/her region.
12. Affix his/her signature on the passport in the presence of the immigration officer when applicants collect his/her passport.
13. Generally, the processing time for this procedure is taken 3-5 days.

• Ghanaian are not allowed to hold to two Contemporary Ghanaian biometric passport
• There are two request and require in the name of the President of the Republic of Ghana all those whom it may concern to allow the bearer to pass freely without let or hindrance and to afford him or her every assistance and protection of which he or she may stand in need.

Need for the Document

• A passport is a document, issued by the national government. It certifies the identity and nationality of the holder for travel abroad. It contains information about the holder; like name, gender, date and place of birth.
• This document does not in itself entitle the passport holder entry into another country, or consular protection while abroad nor any other privileges. However, it does normally allow the passport holder to return to the country where the passport was issued. A right to consular protection arises from international treaties, while the holder's return to the issuing country depends on the laws prevailing in that country.

Information which might help

• Ghanaian passports are passports issued exclusively by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration to Ghanaians granted citizenship in accordance with the Ghanaian nationality law.
• A biometric passport looks like a traditional passport book, but it contains an electronic chip that is encoded with the same information. Issuable to all citizens and non-citizen nationals and valid for five years from the date of issue. Ghanaian biometric contemporary passport is hunter green in color; Ghanaian biometric service passport is cadet grey in color.
• Biometric passports contain a message, nominally from the official who is in charge of biometric passport issuance (e.g., secretary of state, minister of foreign affairs), addressed to authorities of other countries. The message identifies the bearer as a citizen of the issuing country, requests that he or she be allowed to enter and pass through the other country, and requests further that, when necessary, he or she be given help consistent with international norms.
