Procedure

Apply In-Person:

1. Application form for Asylum Visa in Ghana is available in the Ghana Immigration office contact link
2. Then, the applicant must obtain the application form for transit visa.
3. Applicant has to enter all information in the application form.
4. Process all documents required for a transit visa in Ghana. Make sure the visa and ticket to continue to another destination are also processed.
5. The applicant has to make sure he or she has all the required documents that are required for this process to be successful and they can be found under the "Required Documents" section of this page.
6. A fee for this procedure is Free of charge.
7. Completed application forms submit to the Ghana immigration office.
8. If application form is verified, the notification regarding from visa will be sent to the applicant.
9. Then, the applicant after seeing this notification, the applicant must go to the respective office and get their visa.
10. Generally, the processing time for this procedure is one month.

Instructions

• Ensure that there is a well founded fear for you to run away from home country.
• Always carry all identification documents to appointments/ interviews.
• Ensure that identification documents are true copies.
• Applicant must be ready to go by the laws and regulations of the country if application is approved.
• Should not be in war with home country or any other country.
• Must not engage in activities against any other country while in Ghana.
• Must report and declare intentions within fourteen (14) days upon entry into the country.
• The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) shall provide an interpreter to an asylum seeker who cannot speak or write English.
• Appeal upon dissatisfaction from decision of bard, should be within 30 days upon receiving the decision.
• An applicant and every member of his family with application pending the decision of his/her application from Ghana Refugee Board (GRB) has the right to remain within Ghana.

Need for the Document

• Asylum is right to receive legal protection and material assistance from a foreign government after running away from fear of insecurity or persecution in their home country by a foreign government. To apply for asylum refers to applying to obtain refugee status in a foreign country. The Ghana Immigration Service (a member of the Ghana Refugee Board) together with partnering organization United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has the responsibility to handle issues related to refugees.

Information which might help

• If a person is fleeing war zones, persecution or if a person is from refugee producing countries, he / she do not require travel documents to enter Ghana.
• A person seeking asylum may enter the country through unapproved route; but must report to a nearby immigration office upon arrival to formalize entry.

• If asylum is granted, there is provision of security to the foreign nationals of countries with insecure.
• It grants freedom of movement in the country.
• Granting asylum to an applicant grants free entry of spouse and children / dependants in the country.
• Refugees receive of free education and medical services.
