Ghana - Apply for Advocate Special Practicing Certificate

Apply In-Person:
- To Apply for Advocate Special Practicing Certificate in person, the applicant must visit the General Legal Council office or Supreme Court of Ghana or Office of the Attorney General and Ministry of Justice.

- Applicant should obtain the registration form from the relevant department.
- Applicant must be filled all the information in the registration form.
- The applicant has to make sure he or she has all the required documents that are required for this process to be successful and they can be found under the "Required Documents" section of this page.
- Payment of appropriate fees should be made and that can be found under the "Fees" section of this page.
- Submit the registration form, documents along with properly attested photocopies to the local registrar and follow as per authority’s guidelines.
- The registrar and Authorities after checking the attached documents and details submitted will make entries and provide you record number for reference.
- An applicant are also to proceed to pay the prescribed Certificate fees as the Law Council may, by regulations, prescribe; and different fees may be prescribed for different categories of advocates.
- Submit the payment receipt together with the application documents. An application form is free charge.
- A processing time of 14 days is needed to complete the processing of the Advocate Special Practicing Certificate, after which you will be contacted through a phone call to collect your Practicing certificate at the Uganda Law Council offices.
- Applicant will be required to carry your identification documents when collecting your Practicing Certificate, then the registrar shall issue a special practicing certificate.
- The Processing time for this procedure takes 14 days.

- Certificate of Registration as enrolled Advocate.
- Completed filled up form of profession Good conduct attach all requirements thereon.
- Receipt for proof of payment of prescribed fees.
- Bank statement.
- Payment of license fees.
- Passport photographs (2 copies)
- Certificate of no objection from Uganda Law society.
- National Identification Card (Voter ID / DL / Bank Pass Book etc.)

- Proof of academic qualification of the applicant.

EligibilityEdit
A person shall be qualified to be enrolled as an advocate if he fulfils the following conditions:
- He/she is a citizen of Ghana.
- He/she has attained the age of 21 years.
- He/she has completed his bachelor’s in law.
FeesEdit
- License fees: GHS.300,000
ValidityEdit
- The validity period of this advocate special practicing certificate is 1 year (every 31st December of each year).

Need for the DocumentEdit
- The Law Council may, subject to the person obtaining a special practicing certificate, admit to practice as an advocate for the purpose of any one case or matter, any legal practitioner by whatever name called, of any country operating the common law system and designated by the Law Council under subsection of the Act, who has come or intends to come to Ghana for the purpose of appearing in that case or matter.
