ProcedureEdit

  • Gather all necessary documents.
  • Fill up an application form and submit it together with all other required documents.
  • Pay the application fee.


For lost or stolen ID cards, call 0180 1 33 33 33 immediately to block the online ID function (3.9ct/minute from German landlines, max. 42 ct/minute from mobile phones, also available from abroad). Required DocumentsEdit

  • Valid identity document (the old identity card if available, otherwise the passport, child's passport, children's passport)
  • For applicants under 16 years of age, application are submitted by their guardians, usually the consent of the other parent or guardian is also required.
  • Recent photo of the applicant. Sample photo to be submitted
  • Presentation of the applicant's birth certificate may be requiered by authorities when:
    • The applicant have previously owned a passport or identity card or
    • The data on the ID card differ from the entries in the register.

Issuance of identification cards:

  • For person aged 24 and over: 28.80 EUR
  • For persons under 24 years old: 22.80 EUR
  • Provisional identity card: 10 EUR


Other fees:

  • Initial activation of the online ID function: free of charge
  • activation of the online ID function: 6
  • Disabling the online ID function: free of charge
  • Changing the PIN (the Brgeramt eg PIN forgotten): 6
  • Change of address when moving: free of charge
  • Locking the online ID function in case of loss: free of charge
  • Unlocking the online ID function: 6
  • Cost of applying an electronic signature certificate: Determined by the provider

Validity of the document:

  • For persons aged 24 and over when they obtained the document: 10 years
  • For persons under 24 years old: 6 years
  • Provisional identity cards: less than 3 months

Need for the DocumentEdit

A national identity card is a document that certifies the identity and citizenship of its holder.

A German national identity card has biometric function enabling it to be used for official checks at national borders and within the country to verify the card holders identity. Card holders has the option of storing two fingerprints on the chip, making it a secure travel document, like the electronic passport. The card's features prevents strangers from using a lost or stolen document as their own or in illegal activities.

Germany's new identity card also has an electronic identification function which allows its card holders to verify their identity on the Internet or when using vending machines or kiosks.
