Georgia (United States) - How to obtain a Marriage Certificate

You may request a marriage certificate in person at the state Vital Records Office or the County Vital Records Office where the marriage application was originally recorded.
Submit all the necessary documents and pay the fees.
Requests By Mail
Complete a Marriage Record Request Form and mail it to:

Do NOT send cash in the mail. Make certified checks and money orders payable to Vital Records.
Provide a self-addressed stamped envelope. Print or type your name and address on the envelope using all caps.

Certified copies of marriage licenses are available to the general public, but a certified copy of the marriage license application is only available to the bride and groom shown on the marriage license.
FeesEdit
Georgia Department of Public Health
Georgia law requires pre-payment before a record or a service can be provided. Fees are not refundable after a service has been provided. Records are sent first class mail.
- The fee includes one certified copy, if the record is found on file: $10.00
- Additional certifications of same record ordered at the same time (full size only): $ 5.00
- Multi-year search (every three years or portion thereof): $10.00

InstructionsEdit
- Information about marriage records from 1952 to the present - available at the state office.
- Copies of marriage records earlier than 1952 and after 1996 are only available from the county Probate Court where the license was issued.
- Certified copies of marriage licenses are available to the general public, but a certified copy of the marriage license application is only available to the bride and groom shown on the marriage license.
- Some Probate Courts also issue an attractive, framable copy of marriage documents. These copies are not available at the State Vital Records office.
- You may obtain Certified copies of marriage records from the Probate Court in the county where the license was issued.
- The state office and all county offices have public walk-in service; however some county offices may be closed certain days of the week or some time during the day.
- The state office is open from 8:00 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. Monday-Friday, closed on weekends and holidays.
- Georgia law and the Department of Community Health regulation require that all requests for vital records include the signature and picture ID of the requestor and the proper fee.
- You may request your certified marriage certificate by in person or by mail either at "State Vital Records Office" or any "County Vital Records Office"
Note: You may not be able to request a marriage record via email. By law, vital records search requests must be signed and paid for.

Need for the DocumentEdit
Marriage certificate is the official record of two people joining together in a marriage. This certificate is required to make the union between two people legally binding. If you have lost your marriage certificate or if you simply want a duplicate copy of your marriage certificate you can obtain one by following the procedures given below.
