Registration for Locally Trained Nurse

  1. For a nurse/midwife to practice in Gambia he or she should be licensed with the Nursing & Midwives Council of Gambia. It is the responsibility of the council to ensure that all nurses that are within its jurisdiction meet a certain level of competence before starting their practice. Thus, licensing examination is administered to the health practitioner to ascertain that the applicant meets all qualifications. Council Contacts Details
  2. Nurses/midwives who wish to be entered into the council Nursing/midwife roll/register are required to show that they have attained the required competency by council standards.
    • Applicants should refer to the “Eligibility” section of this page to confirm eligibility and contact the council to begin the registration process.
  3. Higher Education Institutions shall submit a list of potential candidates for all cadres/programs to the Health professionals’ competency assessment and licensure to the council's office prior to the examination date.
  4. Sit a pre-registration Nursing and Midwifery council’s Examination. The date and time of the examination will be communicated to the applicant in due course. Only successful applicants will proceed to the next steps.
  5. Upon passing the council national licensure examination, successful candidates are required to submit an application for registration and licensing after the release of the results.
  6. An applicant shall complete and submit the registration form based on the instruction provided by the registrar. Don’t forget to attest the forms with your signature once completed.
  7. A complete application shall be submitted with all relevant supporting documents as listed under the “Required Documents” section below. The registrar will not take responsibility for an incomplete application.
  8. Don’t forget to make the stipulated payment as directed by the officials. Proof of payment should be attached to the application. Please refer to this page’s “Fees” section age for more information.
  9. After you’ve submitted the form, the application, and other documents will be forwarded for examination and verification processes.
  10. Once the verification and validation processes are over and if the application is found sufficient, it will be approved and the officials will proceed to take the required steps.
  11. The applicant will be notified to collect his /her Log Book for rotation, Code for National Service registration, and provisional Practicing license via text or phone call. One is required to bring proof of identification when collecting the documents.
  12. Upon successful completion of the required clinical placement, candidates will be eligible to register fully as a professional medical practitioner (midwifery /Nurse) and will be required to return the Log Book and Provisional License to the council Registry Office.
  13. The registrar shall document candidates’ records, a list of simulated patients, a list of assessment centers, a list of assessors, a list of supervisors, a list of invigilators, a scoring sheet, and other relevant documents.
  14. Once the verification and validation processes are over and if the application is found sufficient, it will be approved and the officials will proceed to take the required steps to Register the beneficiary as per the category applied for.
  15. Once registration and licensing are completed, nurses/midwives will receive a practice license, logbook, nursing badge and registration certificate.
  16. Notification of the beneficiaries via text or phone call. One is required to bring proof of identification when collecting the documents.


Registration of Foreign-Trained Nurses and Midwives

  1. Where the applicant has studied or worked abroad (Citizen/ foreigner) and wishes to be entered into the Gambia Nursing/midwife roll/register he/she is required to show that they have attained the required competency by council standards. Applicants should refer to the “Eligibility” section of this page to confirm eligibility and contact the council to begin the registration process.
  2. Upon receipt of the complete registration dossier, the Registrar will check the documents for completeness and authenticity. If everything is in order he shall forward all applications to the council responsible. which shall then verify the applicant's qualifications with the relevant training school and board of nursing/midwifery from the respective country.
  3. Upon being satisfied with the information provided by the respective institution, candidates will be shortlisted and invited for an oral interview by the Registration and Licensing Committee. Based on the results of the oral interview, successful candidates may be invited to sit a written exam or proceed for a clinical placement to acquaint themselves with the healthcare systems in the Gambia for a period to be determined.
  4. Candidates are issued with a Log Book for rotation, a Code for National Service registration, and a provisional Practicing license.
  5. Upon successful completion of the required clinical placement, candidates will be eligible for full registration as professional health practitioners and are required to return the Log Book and Provisional License to the council Registry Office.
  6. The registrar shall document candidates’ records, a list of simulated patients, a list of assessment centers, a list of assessors, a list of supervisors, a list of invigilators, a scoring sheet, and other relevant documents.
  7. Once the verification and validation processes are over and if the application is found sufficient, it will be approved and a senior registration and licensing officer will proceed to take the required steps to temporarily register the beneficiary as per the category applied for and award the applicant with the registration certificate, badge, CPD logbook, and the practicing license.
  8. The applicant will be notified to collect his/her registration documents via text or phone call. One is required to bring proof of identification when collecting the documents.

  • A valid transcript from a recognized institution
  • A certificate of program completion from a recognized institution
  • Two (2) Passport size photographs. Should be taken in your uniform and MUST have a WHITE background
  • A copy of your Identity Document or Birth Certificate
  • A completed Nursing Council Form (FREE OF CHARGE) Available at the office of the council
  • Proof of payment of the applicable fees as specified by the Authority
  • Any other supporting documentation as requested by the Authority.

EligibilityEdit

  • To be of good reputation and commendable conduct.
  • To have never been sentenced in a felony or misdemeanour (for a custodial penalty in a crime involving moral turpitude or breach of trust, unless rehabilitated in either case). In short, not to have a criminal record.
  • To have attained one of the following academic degrees:
  • A Bachelor of Science in Nursing from one of Gambia’s high institutes, or an equivalent degree elsewhere than in Gambia, which the council recognizes as equivalent to the qualification by examination required by the council.
  • A Diploma from a healthcare institute affiliated with the Ministry of Health/council (nursing division) or an equivalent degree.



FeesEdit

  • Registration Fee for national is GMD500 and GMD600 for international professionals per year.
  • License MUST be RENEWED every year for GMD300 for nationals and GMD600 for internationals
  • Late registration after program completion incurs charges from the date of your program completion until the date of registration. For example, If you graduated in 2018 and applied for registration in 2020, you shall pay for 3 years, from 2018, 2019, and 2020 Plus GMD300 for late registration. That's GMD1800 for locals and GMD2100 for internationals
  • Late renewal incurs a charge of D300 for locals and D600 for internationals



ValidityEdit

  • The validity of the license/ registration certificate shall be mentioned on the document and shall be subjected to renewal and payment of an annual practice fee, this should be submitted on time before the lapse of the current license, to allow enough time for the renewal due process to be completed.
  • Failure to renew your license after 6 months will result in the cancellation of your registration status. You will need to begin the registration process all over.
