Procedure

• You may submit the registration of your marriage via the postal services (not by email, nor by fax), and are not required to come in person to the Consulate. If you do wish to come to the Consulate, the Civil Registry Services are open on a walk-in basis from Monday to Friday between 9:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. We do recommend, however, that you come early in the morning in order to avoid long waits.
• The civil registry services do not make any copies. You must submit the required documents and a photocopy of each.

Required Documents

• Valid passport or carte de sjour
• Acte de Naissance Intgral: Unabridged birth certificate less than 3 months old supplied by a bureau of records, not a hospital
• Justificatifs de domicile: Proof of address supplied by the resident of the commune. Ideally provide two documents proving residence in the commune, for example an EDF bill, telephone account, rent receipt or residential insurance documents
• Information about the witnesses
• The Certificat du Notaire if the couple has concluded a prenuptial agreement (contrat de marriage)

Fees

There is no fee charged for the registration of a marriage, or for the correction of errors on a marriage certificate. Fees are charged for copies of certificate.

Instructions

French law requires the publication of Banns at the mairie of the commune of residence 10 days prior to the civil marriage. Certain documents must be received and approved by the mairie before Banns may be posted. A mairie may require a complete marriage file 10 or more days prior to the publication of Banns.

Need for the Document

All French marriages must be registered with the Government of France. A Registration of Marriage is a permanent legal record of the marriage. After a marriage is registered, you may order a marriage certificate

Information which might help

If you get married by civil ceremony, the Registrar who solemnised the marriage will register the marriage with the information on the MRF as soon as possible after the ceremony. If you get married by religious or secular ceremony, you should give the MRF within one month to a Registrar, for the marriage to be registered. It does not have to be returned to the Registrar who issued it.

Other uses of the Document/Certificate

You will then be issued with a pre-marital certificate. Notification of an impending wedding ( bans) must be published ten days before the ceremony at the town hall where the wedding is to take place.
