Procedure

1. You have to approach the Local Prefectures for applying for driver license, address can be obtained from the following link : Local Prefectures .
2. Make sure you have the documents that are listed under the "Required Documents" section. Application forms can be obtained from the Prefectures when you approach them.
3. Unless you hold a license already, you will be requested to take a theory test for which you have to find 35 of the 40 question with correct answer. Results will be sent you by post or email the same day.
4. If you have cleared your theory test you will have to go through the pratical test which would have to clear to obtain your driver license where you will be tested for your knowledge of the vehicle and driving related information.
5. If you are successful with your test you will be provided with a driver license after approximately 4 months.
6. In the meantime you will be provided with a temporary driver license which you can download it from the Road Safety Site website.

Alternatively, you can approach a driving school in France for applying for Motorcycle driver license which would be a bit expensive.

• Cerfa the referenced Form 06 No. 14948 * 01
• An identity document, Identity Document based on Nationality
• 2 recent passport photos Compliant with format.
• If you are French and are under 25 years, the copy of the individual certificate of participation in the day defense and citizenship (JDC or JAPD) or provisional certificate pending invitation or certificate of exemption.
• if you are abroad, proof of your presence in France for at least six months (payroll, rent receipt ...).

Eligibility

• You must be at least 16 years.
• If you are French and are under 25, you must be in good standing with the census requirements.
• If you are abroad, you must be installed in France for at least six months and have a valid residence permit.
• If you have a health problem, you must have had a medical examination by a physician approved by the prefect.
• If you were born after 1987 and that it is the first class of license you planning to get, you must hold the school road safety certificate (ASSR) or road safety certificate (ASR).

Fees related to the Motorcycle driver license varies between regions.

Validity

The driving license of category A1 is valid for 15 years from the date of issue. This validity is indicated on the document.

• A1 Driver license is for light motorcycle (with or without sidecar) with a maximum power of 11 kilowatts (15 hp) and not exceeding 125 cm3 displacement.
