Ethiopia - Obtain a Motorcycle Drivers License

Apply In-Person:

  1. The application form for obtaining a motorcycle driver’s license is available in the Ethiopian Road Transport Authority office contact link
  2. Applicant should fill-in all the necessary details in the application form.
  3. Applicant should make sure to carry all the documents that are mentioned under the “Required Documents” section of this page (Both photocopies and Originals).
  4. While submitting the document, the applicant should attach the photocopies of the documents (whichever is necessary) along with the application form.
  5. The fee for this process is 50 Birr.
  6. After the application is viewed by the concerned authorities, the applicant must pass the theoretical and practical driving test on the specially equipped vehicle or motorcycle.
  7. Applicant should obtain and read the special motorcycle operator manual which is available at all the Driver’s License service centres located throughout Ethiopia.
  8. Any operator of a motorcycle or motor-driven cycle for special needs requires a special permit allowing them to operate a motorcycle with certain restrictions after completing the requirement established for a motorcycle license.
  9. If the above-mentioned procedures were followed by the applicant, the license will be issued to them within a month.
  10. If the applicant didn’t get their license within a month, then they have to visit the office once again to get information on their application.

  1. The application form is available in the following format link
  2. If the applicant is already a user, they can login directly with their registered mobile number and Password.
  3. If the applicant is a new user, then, they have to register before logging in.
  4. Applicant must upload the digital copies of the documents that are listed under the “Required Documents” section of this page.
  5. Please Fill the Request Form Properly in order to submit your service request application. Fields marked with ‘astrics (*)’ sign are mandatory information that should be provided by you to process your application by selected service provider.
  6. If you wish to pause your application request process and continue later, your can do so by saving your application as a Draft and Resume it later from Draft Applications Section.
  7. After you Submit your Service Request Application, you will be provided with a unique Tracking Number and Service provider branch that will process your service request.
  8. This information will also be sent to your email address you provided at registration time. With your tracking number, you can follow up the progress of your application on Track My Application Section.
  9. You can only apply for the Same Service Request once. Only after the completion of existing Service request, you can reapply to the Service again.
  10. Case worker who handled your service Request may contact you for further information regarding your application.
  11. You can reply for case worker inquires on Messages Section. Depending on your requested service business process, you may also be asked to fill other forms to process your application further on Correspondence Section.
  12. For Service requests that requires a physical presence a as a part of business process (Example: Payment, hard print document verifications, Document Pickup), you will be asked to reserve appointment time On Appointment Section.
  13. Once you complete your reservation, the provider will reserve the time and service counter for you. You can’t change your reservation time, so make sure you will be at reserved service counter before 10 minutes of reservation time.

The documents that are required for the application process are listed below:

  • A signed and stamped eye test
  • 2 copies of your driver’s license (foreigners / visitors)
  • Passport and drivers license(s)
  • Identity card
  • copy of your passport
  • The stamped letter from your Embassy (in cases of foreigners with international permits)
  • 3 passport photos
  • Business Visa / residency visa (Visitors / foreigners)

EligibilityEdit

  • To be eligible to apply for a motorcycle license in Ethiopia one must be eighteen (18) years and above.
  • If the applicant is an immigrant, then, the immigration details are necessary for the application process.

The fee is 5000 Birr.

ValidityEdit

A permit is valid for 6 months (therefore, if a non citizen needs to stay for more than three (3) months in Ethiopia, he /she must obtain a Ethiopian Driver’sLicense.

  • Before applying for the driver’s license, one must prove he she is eighteen (18) and above.
  • Get the necessary Forms for the Licensing Office, Read carefully and fill in the required information.
  • Make all the necessary payments.
  • Attach all the necessary documents required.
  • Return the application form to the Licensing Office.
  • Appear In-person to sign for your permit.
