Procedure

Apply In-Person:

1. The application form for Converting or Exchanging of Foreign Drivers License is available in the Embassy of Ethiopia, Ministry of Foreign Affairs contact link
2. Applicant should go to the Embassy with their driving license (both original and photocopies) and get a letter from them explaining that the driving license you have is equivalent to that of the Ethiopian driving license.
3. Also make sure that the letter also explains about the grade level of your license equivalent to the Ethiopian driving license and weight of the vehicle that you can drive.
4. After obtaining a letter from the Embassy, the applicant has to go to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and submit the letter along with all the related documents that are stamped from the Embassy.
5. Applicant should make sure to carry all the documents that are mentioned in the “Required Documents” section of this page (Both photocopies and Originals).
6. Applicant must attach the photocopies of the documents (whichever is necessary) along with the application form.
7. The fee must be paid as per the authority’s request.
8. They would verify all the documents that you have submitted and stamp in couple of documents that have been submitted by you.
9. After this you would have to take the documents to the Institute for Training and Testing drivers and mechanics where they would provide you with an Ethiopian driver license.
10. If the applicant doesn’t get any information regarding their license within a month, then they can visit the office once again to know about the details of the application.
