Ethiopia - Applying for a Passport

Introduction

The Ethiopian passport is a travel document issued to a citizen of Ethiopia for international travel. The document is a biometric–machine readable passport with a burgundy cover with the text “Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia” above the coat of arms, the text “passport” below it is in English and Amharic .The passport contains 32 pages.

Instructions

To acquire a passport in Ethiopia, it is necessary for one to visit or send an application to The consulate-General of Ethiopia or reach the Ethiopian Embassy in your country

Required Information

Procedure

To apply for a new and first Ethiopian passport

  • Answer All of the questions on the form.
    • Answers must be either typed in or printed in the spaces provided on the form, using BLACK or BLUE ink only.
    • Failure to answer ALL questions will result in the Embassy being unable to process your application or issue a passport.
    • TWO COPIES of the application must be submitted.
  • Submit the fee of £36. For students the fee is £18*.Students applying for a new passport must submit a letter from their respective university/college, and must bring an ID bearing their photograph.The following methods of payment are accepted:
    • Cash
    • Banker's Drafts
    • Postal Orders - made payable to The Ethiopian Embassy.
    • Payment by cheque or any means other than those stated above cannot be accepted.
  • Attach FOUR recent passport-sized colour photographs, using a paper clip.
    • Do not forget to write your name on the reverse of the photographs.
  • Applicants must produce documents that certify their citizenship. (Documents allowed can be your previous passport, ID card, Birth Certificate, etc.)
  • Submit your application form, photographs and fee.

All applications must be made in person as applicants will be required to give fingerprints at the Embassy

New passport for Children born abroad

  1. The Parent should answer All of the questions on the form.
    1. Answers must be either typed in or printed in the spaces provided on the form, using BLACK or BLUE ink only.

    3. TWO COPIES of the application must be submitted.

  6. A copy of the Child's Birth Certificate will be required.
  7. Submit your application form, photographs and fee.

Required Documents

  • Two copies of duly completed passport application form;
  • Certified birth certificate;
  • Original residence permit;
  • Four recent pictures with size 3x4cm;
  • Application form for Ethiopians who left Ethiopia without a travel document and requesting a passport.
  • Passport fee $73.00 CAD.
  • A fingerprint can be taken at local police station or from concerned authorities and authenticated by notary public.
  • Four recent, colored photographs of size 3 x 4 cm with white background and name of the applicant at the back of the photograph;
  • Two copies of any supporting documents showing Ethiopian citizenship (i.e. birth certificate, kebele ID, school certificates, etc.);
  • Two Copies of a Green card (both sides) or I-94 INS papers or other documents that shows present immigration status (for those who do not have a Green Card)


Fees

The amount of fees varies depending on whether you are a child, requiring a new passport,or due when you need your passport. It might range from 600-1500 Ethiopian Birr.

Validity

The Ethiopian passport is valid for 5 year from after being processed

Documents to Use

  • A signed personal letter stating that you are applying for a passport and stating that you have not taken citizenship of another country.
  • Birth certificates authenticated by the Ethiopian Ministry of Foreign Affairs
  • Passport application form must be completed in Amharic and English
  • Residence Permits or residence Visas
  • A certified set of fingerprints taken at local police station or from concerned authorities and authenticated by notary public
  • Proof of police record for those with misplaced passports
  • Copy of lost passport or passport number and date of issue of the lost passport for those with lost passports

Sample Documents

  • Those who have already submitted their finger prints upon receipt of an electronic passport earlier are not required to submit their fingerprints again. However, if you have an old /manual/ passport or was exempted from submitting your finger print due to your minor age then you should submit your finger print anew.
  • Those who are minor under the age of 14 are exempted from providing finger prints.
  • The Embassy also advise all applicants to submit their applications AT LEAST 45 DAYS AHEAD of their planned travel date or prior to applying for any other services that require a valid passport.
  • If the Embassy requests you to submit an additional document, please send it within a week. If you are informed for three times to submit the necessary document and if you fail to submit the requested document, the Embassy shall be obliged to send your original document back to you and you will be requested to apply anew.
  • All applications must be made in person as applicants will be required to give fingerprints at the Embassy


Processing Time

The current processing time at Ethiopian immigration (Addis Ababa) is 1-3 days depending on your inquiry. If you pay more, you may receive your passport at the day you applied for it.
