Ethiopia - Apply for a Temporary Driver License

Introduction

Temporary licenses in Ethiopia are issued for people not entitled to issue commercial licenses used for commercial plates’ purposes. They are issued to an Ethiopian driver’s who on providing they'll be able submit all necessary documents.

Eligibility

Applicants must be hoping to obtain a fully driver’s license as soon as possible.

  • Be 18 years old
  • Take a medical exam
  • Go to the Transport Authority Office where you have to take one written and two practical(behind the wheel) exams
  • Submit a letter of application for driver’s license from your sponsoring organization
  • Submit two passport photos

Instructions

1.Must be Eighteen (18) years and above if hoping to obtain a driver’s license for motor vehicles;

2.Must be sixteen (18) years and above if hoping to obtain a driver’s license for motor cycles;

3.Identify the kind of car you intend to drive;

4.An applicant must ensure that he / she meets the age requirement;

5.Applicant must be in the process of obtain a full driver’s license;

6.Ensure that the forms obtained for application are the right ones;

7.Must have an eye test certificate

8.Must have attended any recognized driving college and awarded a certificate.

Procedure

1.An applicant must first enroll in a recognized driving school in Ethiopia for training;

2.Thereafter go for an eye test. This is done in order to obtain an eye test certificate which is a requirement for obtaining a driver’s permit, and also go for test fee-GRR

3.After the above, go to the Ethiopian Revenue Authority and obtain the prescribed application form and fill it in accurately, attach required documents and submit application to the authority;

4.When application is submitted, at the authority, a passport photo shall be taken and fingerprints shall also be recorded using an electronic system;

5.Thereafter, payment slips are given to the applicant to go and make payment to bank for the temporary permit;

6.After payment is made, an applicant can then go back to the Ethiopian Revenue Authority for the Learner License the following day.

Required Documents

1.Tax Identification Number (TIN) Certificate

2.Driving School Certificate

3.An Eye Test Certificate

For applicants who are not Residents of Ethiopia are required to also present the following documents:

  • Photocopy of passport
  • Photocopy of valid visa
  • Foreign driving license

Fees

Temporary Driver License are issued in return of 50.Birr

Validity

A temporary driver’s permit is valid for three (3) months

Processing Time

After all documents are submitted one may have to wait for two (2) to five (5) days for the temporary driver’s license to be ready.
