Procedure

Apply In-Person:

1. To apply for driving license, applicant has to approach Ethiopian Road Transport Authority contact link
2. Applicant should make sure to enter all information in the application form.
3. Applicant must carry necessary documents that are mentioned under “Required Documents” section of this page.
4. Applicant should make sure to carry photocopies and originals of the documents that are required for the procedure to complete.
5. Applicant must attach photocopies of documents (whichever is necessary) along with the application form while submitting.
6. Fee for this procedure has to be paid as per authority’s request.
7. After verification process, the authority will issue the driving license to the applicant.
8. If you don’t have a foreign driving license, then you have to join in a car driving school in Ethiopia
9. Now you have to get qualified by taking a medical exam. It includes one written and two practical exams.
10. To write the exam, residence permit is mandatory.
11. After qualifying the medical exam, roads authority will issue the driving license.

Instructions

• Driving is on the right-hand side of the road.
• The speed limit for cars and motorcycles in towns and villages is 30-50 km/h and outside towns 100 km/h
• Drivers are not permitted to use their mobile phones while driving
• Motorcyclists must wear crash helmets.
• Children under 7 years of age are not permitted to be in the front seat
• Seat belts are compulsory for a driver and front seat passenger
• It is required to have a first aid kit in each car
• The third party insurance is mandatory. All vehicles must have a windshield sticker displayed as proof of insurance

Need for the Document

• The driving license is issued as an authority to allow a person to drive a motor vehicle of any class on a road in Ethiopia.
• No person is be allowed to drive a motor vehicle on road in Ethiopia unless he is the holder of a valid driving license or a provisional license endorsed in respect of that class of vehicle.
• Any person driving a motor vehicle on a road is required by law carry his driving license or provisional license, and on being so required by a police officer, produce it for examination.
• The driving licence shows compliance with Ethiopia traffic laws regarding driving.
